Our Weekend Adventure

Enchanted Rock
Fredericksburg, TX

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is a Hill Country landmark that is a solid granite dome 500 feet high, which you can climb in 6/10 of a mile. Near the top is the entrance to Enchanted Rock Cave, 1,000 feet deep and one of the largest known granite caves. The panoramic view at top was to marvel at. The rock derives its name from legends of the Comanche Indians, who believed spirits lived here. The Indians are said to have used the rock for human sacrifices, and ghostly lights on the summit and strange noises are still reported sometimes.

The girls (now 2, 4, 6, and 8 years) climbed it with ease, there is something about climbing (vs. hiking up) a 'rock' that captures a child's interest and creates that sparkle of excitement in their eyes. Of course, my 2 year old was in a childs backpack on my back (lucky her and more exercise for me!). On this climb we teamed up with some friends from Austin, and had a scrumptious picnic lunch at the base of the dome.

There are also 7 miles of trails to be explored which surrounds the enchanted dome. For a quick energy hike, this was the perfect place.
