Lost Maples State Natural Area, TX
The most awesome fall foliage in the State of Texas can be found here, as we did on this killer hike at the start of November. This park is located in Vanderpool, near the town of Bandera in the Texas Hill Country. The special features of this park is its abundance of bigtooth maples which are the deciduous type, displaying spectacular colors. We took the Maple Trail, only .4 miles, along the Sabinal Creek. Huge rocks trailside were perfect for the little monkey I had taken along on this hike (Ariana, my three year old). As she climbed and explored on the rocks I looked in awe at the fall foliage contrasting to the emerald green pools in the river and that big blue Texas sky. Aja, my 18 month old was in my backpack, kicking back and enjoying the colorful sights and sounds. I loved the feeling and the soft crunching sounds of walking on fallen leaves during our hike. We gathered as much leaves as possible and threw them high into the air, just to let it fall back down on top of our heads. "It's raining leaves!" Ariana shouted.
At the halfway point we crossed the creek where we ventured off to get our feet wet. We sat on rocks edge and felt the cool flow of the creek flowing through our toes and feet. Nice photos were taken here. The latter half of our hike took us away from the creek, through a path of woodland and clearing. Beyond the trees were the picture perfect rolling hills full of radiant reds and browns speckled in trees of green and yellow. You can count on us coming back to this park every Fall.
