Our Weekend
Adventure
McKinney Falls, TX
Our weekend trip to Austin during the 1998 Christmas season brought us here to McKinney Falls State Park located just southeast of Austin. Since it is so close to the city, the trail is heavily used but nevertheless, convenient for a nice short hike near Onion Creek which winds through the park for about 2 miles. It has long quiet pools in large slabs of rock similar to Pedernales Falls. The creek is lined with bald cypress (providing lots of walking sticks for the kids), occasional rapids and two small nice waterfalls. There are two hiking trails and one 3-mile bike trail in the park. The 3/4 mile Smith Rockshelter interpretive trail has interesting limestone overhangs along it and is a fun hike for small children, easy and level.
