Our Weekend Adventure

Palmetto State Park, TX

This state park is perfect for little ones. It is located on the San Marcos River between the towns of Luling and Gonzales, about one hour east of San Antonio. There are two nature trails which we have been on several times, each about 2/3 of a mile, the river and lake trails. There are nature guides you can obtain at the trail head which describes numerous plants and trees along the river trail. Also near the trail head is a nice playground for the children to enjoy. The trails are canopied with trees covered in Spanish moss and vines, and the ground around them grows the Palmetto and other low growing shrubs. This is one of the hot spots for birdwatching in the state of Texas. Don't forget your binocs. Beware the snakes in this area! Although we haven't seen any YET, there are warning signs throughout the park. During the Spring the Spiderwort wildflowers are very abundant among the Baby Blue Eyes, Bluebonnets, and Red Paintbrushes.

We often picnic here, it's a nice easy access from the main highway yet still out of the way from the hustle and bustle of the city.
