Mom, it was long ago
Yet it seems but yesterday,
That you and I were sweethearts -
Happy carefree, young and gay.
Oft we roamed the hills together,
None existed save you and I -
We were made to love each other,
I never stopped to wonder why.
We were married, happy marriage
Each one making a sacred vow,
To always cling one to the other,
Until death was on our brow
Oft I've thanked the God (Our Father)
In his sacred realms above
For his kindness in his helping-
You bestow on me your Love.
I have toiled, you've toiled beside me
Through the years that took their toll
Side by side we've laughed at trouble
As the time has onward rolled
Clouds of trouble would o'er us gather,
Days were dreary, dark and grey.
Yet I've never heard you murmur
That never seemed to be your way.
I have watched you train our children,
I have heard your many prayers -
Asking Guidance from our Father
That righteous wisdom would be theirs.
God has heard your prayers and answered
Now the children all are grown
We no longer shield or shelter
For they from the nest have flown.
We have seen our children grow up,
We have seen them one by one -
Leave the old nest like a fledgling
Knowing their childhood days were done
We have sent our sons to battle
Our Daughters too, are on their own
So that leaves us where we started
Only you and I alone.
Mom, Your brown hair turns to silver
My hair too, is streaked with grey
Our footsteps are fast becoming faulty
We're not the youths of yesterday.
We will finish life together,
You'll have me and I'll have you
Two old sweethearts grey and wrinkled
That have kept a promise true.
