My favorite story about Eliza occurs during the Civil War. Eliza and Willliam
were going somewhere riding double on a mule. The Confederates were making a
sweep through the countryside rounding up able bodied men for military
service. They were able to make it to a wooded area where Eliza insisted that
William hide and make his escape while she led the Rebels on a merry chase.
Though William was reluctant to leave her, apparently when Eliza made up her
mind, one didn't argue!
Eliza was a kind, strong-willed woman with a great faith in God. My
grandmother (Magnolia Owens Roberts) said she always kept a black dress washed
and ironed and a little bag ready so she could go help family and friends
during illness or a death in the family.
