Boyd W. Altom enlisted in the US ARMY on the 19th of January, 1951 in Batesville, AR.  His basic training was at Camp Chaffee, AR.  from 1/29/1951 till 5/1/1951. He served two tours of duty totaling 5yrs, 10mo. and 4 days, with 4 years and 10mo. spent overseas stationed in Korea and Germany. He was honorably discharged November 19, 1956 at Two Rock Ranch Station, San Francisco, CA.(Co. E Det. #1). While overseas he served with the 8th Field Artillery Battalion 25th Infantry and by 1953 and at the time of his second reenlistment was listed as a Sergeant with the Signal Corps.

During his time with the US ARMY he was awarded the Korean Service Medal w/3 Bronze Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, the Army Occupation Medal(Germany) and the Good Conduct Medal.
