Land in Tennessee was granted by North Carolina until 1800. Following discussion with North Carolina, Tennessee set up land offices in 1806, one for East Tennessee and one for the remainder of the state. About 1824, three additional land offices were established; Mountain District (which covered the Cumberland Mtn. area), Middle Tennessee, and West Tennessee. A few grants were made through the original Tennessee Land Grants System set up in 1806. The Hiwassee District, an area formerly held of Cherokee Indians & covering McMinn & Monroe Counties and parts of Hamilton & Rhea counties, was established in 1819. The last Indian area, the Ocoee District, comprises Polk and Bradley counties, and was established in 1837. There is one additional series, the Watauga Purchase, & this mainly covers Washington County in the 1770's. The original land index was arranged by area or office. It has now been put together as a single index, with all cards of one name appearing in chronological order, without regard for county. The land office which issued the grant is indicated on each card. In requesting copies of grants, it is essential that the researcher identify the district or land office since there are duplications of Book Numbers and Letters in the various districts. Researchers will find that there are several copies of some grants. If cards appear with the same information, but in different districts, book numbers, and papers, the reference is to the same grant. When the 1824 offices were established many of the Tennessee General Grants were copied for use in the various offices.
