Twelve Steps To Becoming A Better Christian
Twelve steps to help strengthen and develop a healthy relationship with Jesus Christ and others around you. These steps are all about the power of change and what the Holy Spirit can do when we exercise not only our bodies, but our minds as well. For a more entailed description of these steps, please read the In Step Student Bible. My wife gave me a copy for Christmas several years ago when we were in college. I do not claim to have perfected any of these steps, but I certainly come to them as reminders to myself on how my walk with Christ and as a Christian should truly be balanced.
1. I admit I cannot be successful on my own...I need help, daily.
...God opposes everyone who is proud, but he is kind to everyone who is humble.Surrender to God! Resist the devil, and he will run from you.Come near God,and he will come near to you.(James 4:6-7)
2. I believe God is there to help me.
God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son,so that everyone who had faith in him will have eternal life and never die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! (John 3:16-17)
3. I will put my life in God's hands and trust Jesus Christ to lead me.
Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any of you want to be my followers, you must forget about yourself. You must take up your cross and follow me. If you want to save your life, you will destroy it. But if you give up your life for me, you will find it. What will you gain, if you own the whole world but destroy yourself? What would you give to get back your soul? (Matthew 16: 24-26)There is a great song by Ray Boltz called Take Up Your Cross that demonstrates this passage very well.
4. I will take a hard look at myself, the way I live and my moral standards.
No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a clay pot. A lamp is put on a lampstand, so that everyone who comes into the house can see the light. Your eyes are the lamp for your body. When your eyes are good, you have all the light you need. But when your eyes are bad, everything is dark. So be sure that your light is not darkness. If you have light and nothing is dark, then light will be everywhere, as when a lamp shines brightly on you. (Luke 11:33-35)
5. I will admit to God, to myself, and to someone I trust what I do wrong.
If you have sinned, you should tell each other what you have done. Then you can pray for one another and be healed. The prayer of an innocent person is powerful, and it can help a lot. (James 5:16)
6. I want God to take control of my life and make me a complete person.
7. I need God to remove my shortcomings.
8. I will make a list of those I wrong and be willing to make things right.
9. I will make things right with people I wrong, except when to do so would hurt them or others.
10. I need to continue looking inside--admitting when I am wrong.
11. I will pray to God on a regular basis, asking him to direct me and give me the power to live for him.
12. Because God is changing my life through following these steps, I will tell others about them and daily practice what I have learned. - Joe and Julie
