Our Cuban Holiday

Fort Morro

Castillo del Morro sits atop the cliffs at the narrow entrance to Santiago Bay. Construction begun around 1640, and the Morro was rebuilt in 1664, after the pirate Henry Morgan reduced it to rubble.

You can sort of get a sense of how the huge cliff would have completely hidden pirate ships from view!

As we looked closely at the cliff side behind us in the picture, we noticed half hidden openings for canons. My zoom didn't catch those, though!

The tour guide said Haitian slaves were used to build Castillo del Morro and to protect the secrecy of the many hidden passageways and rooms, the slaves were killed after the work was done.
