Melissa started skating at the age of four and a half after watching her brother and her cousin skate around the local rink. She is the second child of the Truongs, who immigrated to the United States in the middle of the '70s. Her parents are well educated and both are engineers and have very high reputation from their family. Melissa was a member of a pre-team (level 5) at Hill's Gymnastics Training Center, where Dominique Dawes used to train and took home a GOLD in summer olympic 1996. Beside skating, Melissa used to practice six hours a week for her gymnastics. Melissa is a very independent child and also an excellent student. Her school and activities' schedules are extremely tight and busy. "Not one second to spare", but as her mind has set off for "practice, practice, practice... practice makes perfect". This is the one and only quote that her dad had given her. Since Melissa started skating more and more, her practice ice time increases more and more, too. As a result, her parents have to ask Melissa to make a decision to either pick gymnastic or ice skating for her favorite sport but not both. In May of 2000, Melissa withdrew herself out of the pre-team, and devoted all her time into ice skating. Her gymnastic's coach was not at all happy to see Melissa leaving the team, but she understood that Melissa could only do so much within the 24-hour of a day. Melissa joined ballet school (the same time frame she joined gymnastic) near by her house to improve her artistry, and in 2001 her skating's coach convinced her mom to send her to Maryland Youth Ballet school for more quality training in ballet. Also in 2001, Melissa joined a private swimming team to improve her endurance so that she has the energy to perform a longer music program. Beside ice skating, Melissa also plays piano as well as violin. She competes in piano every year and did very well in most of the competitions. In school, Melissa is always a straight A's student. She also is a member of Center Talented for Youth (CTY) at John Hopkins University. In September, 2003, Melissa attended Roberto Clemente Middle School Magnet Program (designing for highly motivated students and top students in their regular school) for her middle school years. She has had a very busy and tough schedule between this Magnet Program and her skating career and still be able to maintain her straight A's. On top of all these activities and very rigorous school work, Melissa still finds time to join herself in an orchestra. She is currently a member of Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) and swims twice a week as a senior level for Rockville Montgomery Swim Club (RMSC). Melissa's goal for making into Montgomery Blair High School Magnet Program (the most difficult high school the USA) and for training herself very hard to move up to Novice level for her ice skating career have come true. She is now a Freshman at Montgomery Blair High School and an elegant Novice Skater. Her first quarter at Montgomery Blair High School was pretty impressive. She earned a 3.75 for unweighted GPA and 4.75 for Weighted GPA. All of her classes at Blair are Honor and Advanced. She was aiming for straight As, but was short by 2 points only. On top of all these honor and advanced classes, she also joins Web Design team, Physic Team, and Honor Symphonic Orchestra at her school as well. Beside this rigorous program at Blair, she is also helping out at her music school, NPSM, to teach music theory for little kids, aging from 4 to 8, and helping the music school to maintain their NPSM school website. Finally, needless to say, Melissa is continuing her skating training even tougher than before. She added another coach into her skating coaching team to help her to work on her double axel and triple jumps. She is trying to practice her skating for at least 1-2 hours every day, except for Sunday. Melissa finally finished her freshman year at Montgomery Blair HS with a stunning 3.8 GPA and 4.8 WGPA. Her high school Honor Symphonic Orchestra placed first at Boston Heritage Festival (April 2007), where she was a first violin for this orchestra. Melissa is planning to play for her high school Honor Symphonic Orchestra throughout her four years of high school.
