On the first of January 1854, Dr. Goodloe decided not to pursue a career in medicine and, persuaded by his brother, took posession of a farm in St. Francis County, AR. He purchased seed, machinery and 16 slaves to work it. In November of the following year, he and Sallie Louise Cockrill of northern Alabama were married. They lived and farmed there until January 1860 when, because of Mrs. Goodloe's declining health, they bought a home in central Tennessee and moved there. For a time the Arkansas farm continued to be operated for them by a Mr. Williams; the presumption is that most of the enslaved people continued to work there until they were freed.
This list was found among Dr. Goodloe's papers. The separation by gender is as it was in the original. I have included this information in these family pages in the hope that contemporary African-Americans may come upon it in the search for their families in that time and place. If this should happen, I would be happy to correspond with the searchers to provide more information about the owners if that would be helpful.
