WILL of JOHN BROUGHTON

In the Name of God Amen. I John Broughton of St. John's Parish in Berkley County in the State of South Carolina, Gentleman, being in perfect Health and of a sound and disposing Mind, Memory and Understanding (blefsed be God for the same) but calling to Mind the Frailties and Uncertainties of Human Life, do make, publish and declare this to be my last will and Testament as follows. First and Principally I commit my Soul unto the Hands of Almighty God, trusting that through his Mercy and the Merits and Mediation of my blefsed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ I shall enjoy eternal Life. My Body I desire may be decently buried at the discretion of my executrix and Executors hereafter named and Appointed, and for such Worldly Estate as it hath pleased god to blefs me with, I give, devise and bequeath thereof as followeth, that is to say, I will, that all my just Debts and Funeral Charges be first paid and satisfied, before any division be made of any part of my Estate. Also I give, devise and bequeath unto my dear Mother Mary Broughton my whole Estate both real and personal, during the Term of her Natural Life, and at her Death I give devise and bequeath unto my Nephew Alexander Broughton Motte my Plantations or Tracts of Land by the Name of Kibblesworth and the Farm to him, his Heirs and Afsigns for ever, with this provisio, that my Sister Charlotte Broughton has the use of as much good Swamp and high Land, to Plant, as her Slaves can attend, and a Home on those places during the Term of her Natural Life or the day of Marriage with the use of Gardens, Orchards, Pastures, Buildings and every necefsary conveniencies. Also I
give, devise and bequeath unto my nephew Alexander Broughton Motte my Chesnut Mare by the name of Aurora with all her future Increase to him his Heirs and Afsigns for ever. Also my Will is that the rest and residue of my Estate both real and Personal to be equally divided between my two Sisters Mary Motte and Charlotte Broughton, share and Share alike, to them and the Heirs of their Body's for ever. And Lastly I do declare this to be my last Will and Testament, and do Nominate, Constitute and Appoint my Mother Mary Broughton, my Sisters Mary Motte and Charlotte Broughton my Executrix. Colonel Isaac Motte and Keiting Simons Esqr. Executors of this my last Will. In Witnefs whereof I have hereunto set my hand and Seal this nineteenth day of August in the Year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and eighty nine.
