LYONS
(Pokey's Corners, Hale's Corners, Lion's Green)
-Location: situated north of Aylmer on Hwy 73 in S.Dorchester township
-originally known as "Pokey's Corners" because of the "lean-to" pokey- looking shanty inn that travellers could seek shelter in for a night & feed his oxen.
-it became a favorite stopping spot of travellers so William Hale built an inn on the site and the corners were then known as "Hale's Corners" until Hale's death. The name was changed then to "Lion's Green" because of the green lion on the sign of the inn.
-in approx 1860, shortly after the first post office opened in 1854, the hamlet got it's present name.
-The Lyons Cheese Factory was started in 1870 but closed down after several years due to competion.
-1st school was a log builing situated a mile south of Lyons on the east side of Hwy73. Christinanna Scott and Mr. Whitmore were 2 of the early teachers.
-A second school was a frame building located just east of the old Methodist church and employed Ann Sinclair and Albert Doan as teachers.
-the 3rd school, old S.S.No.6 stands east of the corners on Elgin county Rd 48 was built in 1872 (opened in 1873) and Wm White was it's 1st teacher.
-The old Methodist church, built in 1866, was known for its strong and most active charges in the London Conference of the Methodist Church for many years.
I have gathered the above information from several different sources, over the years esp. "Sims' History of Elgin County, by Hugh Jeffrey Sims; 1984; pr. by Aylmer Express Ltd" and believe it all to be true. However I very much welcome any corrections anyone may be able to give me and with proper documentation (via email), changes will be made promptly.
Thanx .. auntie chaos ...
