Location: South off hwy 24 just east of Turkey Point, 15 min. west of Port Dover on north shore of Lake Erie.
Interesting sites: Nestled within the village are four "century homes".
The Post Office and Union Hotel date back to the early to mid-1800's.
Samuel MASON settled the area as far back as 1818 and started
"the Big Furnace" where much of Ontario and area ironware was made.
Joseph VanNorman followed, as did others, to work in the furnace.
Many of the items manufactured here can be seen at the **Eva Brook
Donly Museum in Simcoe.
Named after Joseph VanNorman, this communittee was once one of
the most important places in the county, with its large quantities
of bog iron ore.
Once known as "Potter's Creek" after pottery which once was
located here.
** added notes:
Eva Brook Donly Museum is located at 109 Norfolk Street S., Simcoe.
I have gathered the above information from several different sources, over the years,
and believe it all to be true. However I very much welcome any corrections anyone may be able
to give me and with proper documentation (via email), changes will be made promptly.
