were the owners of the largest plantation in Montgomery County, a tract of

attended Dr. Henry Tutwiler's school at Green Springs for three years,was a
student at University of Virginia, graduating, 1860. He joined the FirstAlabama
Cavalry under Gen. James H. Clanton. After the war he became a member ofthe
well known firm of Marks and Gayle, and was a banker and business man.For many
years served as junior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church. Married 1Oct
1862, at Montgomery, AL to Laura Hall Snodgrass, of that place."

231. Nicholas Meriwether Marks

James, Hastings, John) was born in Montgomery Co, AL, 6 Oct 1844. Hisearly
childhood was spent at the family plantation home. He received his primary
education under the direction of governesses and tutors.
Later he entered the University of AL at Tuscaloosa, but left schoolat
the age of eighteen to enlist in the Confederate army. Served as 1stLieutenant
and adjutant of the 7th AL Cavalry attached to the command of Gen. NathanB.
Forrest.
He was severely wounded at the battle of Franklin, TN, by a sharpshooter.
When able to travel was taken a prisoner of war to Fort Delaware, andkept for
six months until the close of the war, when General Lee surrendered.
After being discharged he returned to his home in Alabama, and afterthe
death of his father took charge of the plantation, and assumedguardianship of
the younger brothers and sisters.
When the Confederate Veterans of KY organized in 1901, he became acharter
member of this group and served as commander of Confederate Veterans ofKY. For
several years he was Commander of the 4th Brigade, of the KY Division,U.C.V.
During the year preceding his death he was honored with the Honorary rankof
Brigadier General, being promoted from Colonel of Staff to this rank. Hewas
greatly interested in the activities of this organization, and took anactive
part in many of their reunions.
He became ill while attending the reunion at Puree valley, 10 Nov1904 and
never rallied. He died at the St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, KY, 20 Nov1904.
Mr. Marks was an active Mason from his early manhood, and served as
Eminent commander of Wevv Commandery, No. 3, of Knights Templar. Was anElk,
and member of the Abe Buford Camp, no 97, U.C.V. at Versailles, KY.
He was an ardent student of economics and agriculture, and aconstructive
reader. He desired and attained a college education and profession for his
children.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church, active in the work of hisparish
and the diocese, and was junior warden of St. John's Church atVersailles, at
the time of his death.
Although a loyal and prominent citizen of his adopted state KY, henever
lost his intense love for the South, and seldom missed his yearly visitto his
native state, Alabama.
On 7 Nov 1867, he married Miss Ella Farley, of Montgomery, AL, wholived
only a few months. 12 Feb 1873, he married Miss Lucy Elizabeth Barnett,
daughter of Nicholas D. Barnett and Sarah (Powell) Barnett, of Nontgomery,
AL. He was living in Montgomery at this time, and here two of his children
were born. Nicholas Barnett, who lived to maturity and Louise who died in
infancy.
"About the year 1877, he with his wife and young son Nicholas moved to
Kentucky, joining the other southern families who had gone to Kentucky and
settled in the Pisgah Community, on the border of Woodford and Fayette
Counties, between the small towns of Versailles and Lexington, the centerof
the famous blue grass region.
"He was a successful farmer, and accumulated what at that time was
considered a fortune in farm lands in this region.
"His death occurred on 20 Nov 1904, his wife Lucy Elizabeth Marks,having
passed away several years before, on 2 dec 1891, Seven children survivedthem.
In August 1893 he married Miss Lucy Ellen Jones. of Montgomery, AL,who is
living in MT. They had one child, Emily Taliaferro, who died in infancy."
