FAMILIES AND THEIR KIN2 FAMILY TIES, X-3 November 1994
pp. 5-6; Letter dated Camden, Arkansas, 19 Jul 1934:
Dear Relatives and Friends;
Another year has come and gone and the happy meeting of lod friendsand
kinfolks is here again. Although Doctor's orders forbid me being withyou, in
thought I mingle with you and seem to feel your warm hand grasps. I havebeen
exceedingly fortunate in being able to attend the annuyal Reunions sincemy
Father first started having family groups at his old home soon after theCivil
War. Only once can I recall being absent before, so today I am hoping youwill
have a pleasant day, a large attendance, the usual good dinner and fun ofall
kinds.
Please remember if any of you come near enough, would be glad if you
would stop by and see me.
Attendance is made more uncertain for many of uys each year so tothe
younger members we must pass the flaming torch, the Marks familytradition to
keep itglowing on down through the years to come with love and courage,
honesty, and faith in your fellow man, Our ancestors have for the past100
years lived in love and charity with their neighbors serving their country
during the war times and peace and helped in numerous ways to make thehistory
of the southern part of our good state, They have reared sons anddaughters
worthy of perpetuating the names. May you always bear in mind that youhave the
responsibility of maintaining a record of honor and when you hand yourtorch
to the next gerneration may they be a little brighter for your havingcarried
them.
Lots of love I send to youall,
Catherine A. Marks
[She was married to her cousin John Harvie Marks III, son of John Harvie
Marks II and his second wife Nancy. Her parents were John H. (Little Jack)
Marks (son of Hastings Marks) and Matilda Thornton Marks. The first Marks
reunion in 1877 was held at their home in Calhoun County nearChambersville.]
