p. 129; "John Stark Cargile was the most troublesome one ofCharles' sons
to get started off; but when he got started nothing could hold him back.He
wass married the first time at 26, and was earning the sum of two dollarsa day
for himself and team. He would take a load of cotton to a certain town in
Arkansas, and if fortune favored him he weeeeuld return with a load ofgoods
for his father's store, thereby making four dollars a day, but these dayswere
few. He worked at anything he could find to do, and in a short time was asmall
merchant. When he was about thirty-four, the lumber business attracted his
attention, and he entered that business and after many years ofunremitting
toil was on the waaay to prosperity. he found his talent in directing the
large saw mills in South Arkansas and Louisiana. His health became poorafter
eighteen years in this business, and he sold out his interest in thelumber
business.
"He has been interested since then in banking, farming, and other
interests. A born leader. His efforts have been crowned with success. In1932,
he became interested in the campaign of the present Governor, and becameso
enthusiastic over his economy program that he did his utmost to get him
elected. After Governor Futrell took over the reins of Government heappointed
five Highway Commissioners, and they elected J.S. Cargile Chairman of the
Commission. Mr. Cargile has been avvle to provide for a large family whoare
doing their part to keep the Cargile standard high."
