I have always loved stories of ships struggling in dark, stormy seas and the seamen suddenly seeing that wonderful beacon of hope and safety, the light from a lighthouse.

While travleing, I have visited one lighthouse and attempted to visit this one:

Punta Celerain Lighthouse, Cozumel, Mexico
This old lighthouse can only be accessed by car (jeep recommended) and is located at southern eastern tip of the island. To get there, you must take a 4km dirt road off the main road . After rainy days, the roads are often flooded. You can climb the lighthouse and stay for fried fish and beer. This site was temporarily closed late summer of 1998. I went to visit but could not access the area.

One of the most famous icons of the Coast, the Biloxi Lighthouse is the only lighthouse in the middle of a four lane highway! Located on Highway 90 (Beach Blvd)at the foot of Porter Avenue, the Biloxi Lighthouse has been a symbol of Biloxi's maritime history since it was erected in 1848. This lighthouse was also closed when we visited so we could not go inside.

TILLAMOOK ROCK LIGHTHOUSE

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse was built in 1880, an engineering feat for its time. It is considered one of the three most weather exposed in the world. It is located between Seaside, Oregon and Cannon Beach. It was purchased in 1980 and turned into a cemetary/columbarium at sea to create funds for its historic preservation. It is a mile and a half out to sea. Tillamook Rock Lighthouse is endearingly called "Terrible Tilly." Obviously, there's some reference to the light's vulnerability to the weather conditions, and of course, the history of those who drowned, or nearly drowned in the rough seas below its foundation.

CAPE HATTERAS LIGHT

A site devoted to the light- houses along the coast near her home.
LIGHTS of the OUTER BANKS
Cape Hatteras is the most famous of these and the recently moved in a huge operation due to erosion.

The Morris Island Light is located just north of Folly Beach. It is surrounded by water but still can be viewed from Folly beach. It is the second light to be built in that area. The first lighthouse was built around 1837 and was just over 100 feet tall. It was destroyed in the Civil War like so many other lighthouses in the South and was rebuilt in 1876. This structure at 161 feet tall still stands today. It was replaced in 1962 by the Lighthouse at Sullivan's Island. The Coast Guard had planned to tear down the Lighthouse but local citizens fought to save the it.

Hunting Island Lighthouse
Built: 1875
Decommissioned: 1933

This light replaced a previous light built in 1859 that was destroyed during the Civil War. In 1887 this light, located about halfway between Charleston and Savannah, had to be moved due to beach erosion. It was dismantled and reassembled 1.3 miles from the old site and relit on October 3, 1889. The tower is still in good condition today and is located in Hunting Island State Park.

LIGHTSHIPS!

For years, the entrances to major waterways in the United States were protected by moored lightships. The first such lightship was used to mark Craney Island, VA ( Portsmouth, VA) in 1820. The names of the waterways often were painted on their sides.

The Chesapeake Lightship marked the entrance of the Chesapeake Bay until it was replaced by the present Chesapeake Light, a Texas tower type of platform. A good informational page on
Lightships and Light Towers is at
