As you
put your golf clubs in the car, the drive to
Bronzwood Golf Course in Kinsman, Ohio doesn't much
enter your mind. From our hometown, Warren, Ohio,
it' a relaxing 25 minute drive toward the Northeast
Ohio/Pennsylvania border on winding, country roads.
Continuing on through the small
town
of Kinsman, you'll pass the gazebo in the townsquare
that is always decorated for the
next event, no matter what the
season. Further up the road you may even catch a
glimpse of an Amish family in their horse-drawn
buggy.
Next stop is Bronzwood, owned and operated by Jim and Natalie Bronson, and now their children also, Jamie and Lee. The course - eighteen holes - up and down hills, through the woods and wide-open spaces - where corn used to grow. All these things and more make up this challenging course.
The
golfing at Bronzwood is definitely fun, but there is
so much more that keeps me going back. I remember
the "Bug Special", 36 holes of golf with cart, and
lunch (one of the best sandwiches anywhere), all of
this only $16. What a deal that
was!
The Chicken
Open. Did
you ever hear of that one before? This was usually
on a Wednesday, a whole group would report off work,
play golf all day, finish up with a chicken dinner
afterwards. Legend has it that it was called the
Chicken Open (not because of the chicken dinner) but
whoever didn't take off work to play was "chicken"!
My favorite has always been Couples Scotch, where couples alternate shots around the course. You'd be surprised the situations you could leave your partner in, just ask my wife!
Bronzwood also has
the regular stuff, league play, outings, the
Bronzwood Open, but the event that continues to grow
in attendance is the Ladie's Tournament, sponsored by
the Monday Nite Ladies League. It's a great event,
with lots of fun, fantastic prizes, all at a great
price, but the kicker is the homemade
food.
This year's tournament was very special for us. It was held in honor and celebration of my mother-in-law, Joyce Mick, who was a member of the Monday Nite League for over 20 years, and Natalie's sister, Betty Grunder. The tournament raised over $1,000 for the American Cancer Society, which was donated in their names. It was truly a celebration of the heart at Bronzwood.
