State champion always has a nice ring to it and the trophies this year were worthy of the honor. Picture a gold chalice cup on a marble stand and you get the idea. The decision to upgrade the honors for the first and second place champions this year was a big hit, as was the higher quality shirts given out as souvenirs. Those gifts, competitive play, free food all weekend, $10 referee fees, free soda donated from RC Cola, lots of friends all combined to make this an excellent weekend. I saw quite a number of players who couldn't play the weekend, still come out and enjoy the show. This year we initiated a traveling plaque for top club honors. Points were awarded for each finish in a quarterfinal event and higher for each participant in the tournament. The host club, the Athletic Club of Bloomingdale took home the top club honor with a good showing of first and second place winners. Naper Olympic and the Glass Court Clubs were not far behind. Each year, the winner club gets to keep the plaque until the next State Singles. Let's not let the home club get away so easily next year.
