Friends of the children beholding
God's face, Moving like thought to us through the beyond,
Molded in beauty and free from our bond

Angels, sing on! your faithful watches keeping;
Sing us sweet fragments of the songs above;
Till morning's joy shall end the night of weeping,
And life's long shadows break in cloudless love.

More dazzling white than any earthly show

Call to the soul when man doth sleep,
So some strange thoughts transcend our wonted themes,
And into glory peep.

None sing so wildly well
As the angel Israfel
And the giddy stars (so legneds tell)
Ceasing their hymns, attend the spell
Of his voice, all mute.

'Tis you, and your estranged faces, that miss the many-splendoured thing.

Unseen, both when we wake and when we sleep.

Soft as the voice of an angel,
Breathing a lesson unheard,
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word:
Wait till the darkness is over,
Wait till the tempest is done,
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow,
After the shower is gone.

They are idols of hearts and of households;
They are angels of God in disguise;
The sunlight that sleeps in their tresses,
His glory still gleams in their eyes;
These truants from home and from Heaven,
They have made me more manly and mild;
And I know now how Jesus could liken
The kingdom of God to a child.
--Charles Monroe Dickinson

Now let us sing the Angels' song,
That rang so sweet and clear,
When heav'nly light and music fell
On earthly eye and ear.
To Him we sing, our Savior King,
Who always waits to hear.

Press nearer to our side;
Into our thoughts, into our prayers,
With gentle helpings glide.

like angel's footsteps in the night.

--Church inscription

Life is so generous a giver, but we,
Judging its gifts by their covering,
Cast them away as ugly, or heavy, or hard.
Remove the covering, and you will find hidden beneath it
A living splendor, woven of love,
by wisdom, with power.
Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the
Angel's hand that brings it to you.
Everything we call a trial, a sorrow,
or a duty,
Believe me, that Angel's hand is there.
--Fra Giovanni

Unless you can love as the angels may ...
Oh never call it loving.
--Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I will not wish thee riches nor the glow of greatness,
but that wherever thou go,
some weary heart shall gladden at thy smile,
or shadowed life know sunshine for awhile.
And so thy path shall be a track of light,
like angels' footsteps passing through the night.

--Words on a church wall in Upwaltham, England

And with the morn
Those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since,
and lost awhile.
--John Henry Newman

May flights of angels led you on your way
To paradise, and heav' n's eternal day!
May martyrs greet you after death's dark night.
And bid you enter into Zion's light!
May choirs of angels sing you to your rest
With once poor Laz' rus, now forever blest!
--Traditional hymn

With a look toward Heaven, I swept my arms and legs
back and forth,
Making my own personal angel.

And hoarse with having little else to do,
Excepting to wind up the sun and moon,
Or curb a runaway young star or two.
--Lord Byron

Once in a Saintly Passion

Once in a saintly passion
I cried with desperate grief,
"O Lord, my heart is black with guile,
Of sinners I am chief."
Then stooped my guardian angel
And whispered from behind
"Vanity, my little man,
You're nothing of the kind."

I will not wish thee riches nor the glow of greatness, but that wherever you go . . . your path shall be a track of light, like Angels' footsteps passing through the night.

But all God's angels come to us disguised:
Sorrow and sickness, poverty and death,
One after another lift their frowning masks,
And we behold the Seaph's face beneath,
Radiant with the glory and the calm
Of having looked upon the front of God.
--James Russell Lowell

Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heavenly music floats
O'er all the weary world;
Above its sad and lonely plains
They bend on hovering wing;
And o'er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.
--Edmund Hamilton Sears

If a fairy, or a man, or a woman
Hath overlooked thee,
There are three greater in heaven
Who will cast all evil from thee
Into the great and terrible sea.
Pray to them, and to the seven angels of God,
And they will watch over thee.
--Irish Blessing

Angels, in the early morning
May be seen the Dews among,
Stooping - plucking - smiling - flying -
Do the Buds to them belong?

Angels, when the sun is hottest
May be seen the sands among,
Stooping - plucking - sighing - flying -
Parched the flowers they bear along.
--Emily Dickinson

My childhood's earliest thoughts are linked with thee;
The sight of thee calls back the robin's song,
Who from the dark old tree
Beside the door, sang clearly all day long,
And I, secure in childish piety,
Listened as if I heard an angel sing
With news from heaven, which he could bring
Fresh every day to my untainted ears
When birds and flowers and I were happy peers.
--James Russell Lowell

The angels in high places
Who minister to us,
Reflect God's smile, their faces
Are luminous.
--Robert Gilbert Walsh

The feather, whence the pen
Was shaped that traces the lives of these good men,
Dropped from an angel's wing.

I saw the tracks of angels in the earth,
The beauty of heaven walking by itself on the world.
--Petrarch

How Fading are the joys we dote upon!
Like apparitions seen and gone.
But those which soonest take their flight
Are the most exquisite and strong--
Like angels' visits, short and bright;
Mortality's too weak to bear them long.
--John Norris

All day I have been tossed and whirled in a preposterous happiness:
Was it an elf in the blood? or a bird in the brain? or even part
Of the cloudily crested, fifty-league long, loud uplifted wave
Of a journeying angel's transit roaring over and through my heart?
--C. S. Lewis

Laughter is a melody,
a concert from the heart,
a tickling by the angels,
creative living art.

The dearest things I know are what you are.

Spread the gospel's joyful tidings,
brought from angels from above,
Tell the world that God is gracious,
and His very name if Love.
--D. B. Towne

Cease every joy, to glimmer on my mind,
But leave, oh leave the light of Hope behind!
What though my winged hours of bliss have been,
Like angel visits, few and far between.
--Thomas Campbell

Think, In mounting higher,
The angels would press on
us, and aspire
To drop some golden orb
of perfect song
Into our deep, dear silence.
--Elizabeth Barrett Browning

As once the winged energy delight
carried you over childhood's dark abysses,
now beyond your own life build the great
arch of unimagined bridges.

Wonders happen if we can succeed
in passing through the hardest danger;
but only in a bright and purely granted
achievement can we realize the wonder.

To work with Things in the indescribable
relationship is not too hard for us;
The pattern grows more intricate and subtle,
and being swept along is not enough.

Take your practiced powers and stretch them out
until they span the chasm between two
contraditictions . . . For the God
wants to know Himself in you.
--Rainer Maria Rilke

Angels where ere we go,
Attend our steps whate'er betide.
With watchful care
their charge attend,
And evil turn aside.
--Charles Wesley

The world has angels all too few,
And heaven is overflowing.
--Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Angels at the foot,
And Angels at the head,
And like a curly little lamb
My pretty babe in bed.
--Christina Rossetti

LITTLE ANGELS

When God calls little children
to dwell with Him above,
we mortals sometimes question
the wisdom of His love.
For no heartache compares with
the loss of one small child,
who does so much to make our world
seem wonderful and mild.
Perhaps God tires of calling
the aged to His fold,
so He picks a rosebud
before it can grow old.
God knows how much we need them,
and so He takes but few,
to make the land of Heaven
more beautiful to view.
Believing this is difficult,
still somehow we must try;
the saddest word mankind knows
will always be 'good-bye'.
So when a child must depart,
we who are left behind
must realize God loves children,
Angels are hard to find.
--Author Unknown

Spread the gospel's joyful tidings,
brought from angels from above,
Tell the world that God is gracious,
and His very name is Love.
--D. B. Towner

"I'll lend you for a little time a child of mine," he said,
"For you to love the while she lives and mourn for when she's dead,
It may be six or seven years or twenty-two or three,
But will you, till I call her back, take care of her for me?

She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and should her stay be brief,
You'll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise she will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.

I've looked the wide world over in my search for teachers true;
And, from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.
Now will you give her all your love, not think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call and take her back again?"

I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord, thy will be done!"
"For all the joy the child shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run;
We'll shelter her with tenderness, we'll love her while we may,
And for the happiness we've known forever grateful stay;

But should the angels call for her, much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand."

ANGEL of CHRISTMAS

Angel of Christmas... Angel of Light...
Guiding our wishes through Heaven tonight
A wish for a friend who is now far away...
A wish for a Lover to come back someday.
Angel of Christmas... take with you in flight
The dreams and the wishes we send forth this night A wish for the world... to find Peace and Joy
A wish for a child to find a new toy
With a light in His eyes.... and a gleam in Her smile
and a blanket of warmth cover them all the while
And please keep them safe on this special night
giving them dreams of sweetness and light
Angel of Christmas....you hold under your wing
All of our prayers ... and our hopes ... and our Christmas Dreams
