An Angel's Eye

In June of 1984 my son, Matthew, was almost three years old. We lived in a third floor condominium, 36 feet above the ground. While playing in his room, Matthew climbed up into his window sill, pushed the screen out and fell to the ground.

His father was home with him and heard the screen slam against the brick building. He walked into our son's room and saw the screen open, looking down he saw Matthew on the ground. My husband ran down the three flights of stairs yelling to the neighbors for help. The paramedics arrived and began to treat Matthew, who was conscious and crying.

I was called at work and informed that Matthew had had a "little accident." I arrived to the emergency room expecting to find my son needing stitches or something minor. I saw him lying there, apparently lifeless. Crying, I turned and asked the nurses what had happened. My husband was finally able to say that Matthew had fallen out his bedroom window.

As I stood there trying to comprehend this, I was informed by the Emergency Room doctor that my baby had swelling of his brain, a broken leg, broken hip and perforated eardrum. As I followed the gurney to the CAT-Scan area, Matthew began to have a seizure.

I was told that Matthew would require surgery that put a drain into his brain. He was placed in Intensive Care where we visited him for 10 minutes of every hour.

By this time my mom and most of my family had arrived at the hospital. Many prayer sessions were held and many, many private prayers said. When morning came, Matthew was waking. He turned towards me, opened his eyes and cried, "Mommy, I falled out the window." I had an overall sense that everything would be okay with him.

As the day progressed we found that Matthew did not require brain surgery. Then we found the broken leg, that was to have needed surgery, would now only be placed in a cast. Matthew's hip was not broken and he did not have another seizure. The doctors described my son's recovery as miraculous. I believe the angels caught Matthew as he fell and slowly placed him down on the ground.

Matthew turned 16 one month ago. He has started his sophomore year in high school. He is an honor student and plays running back on the school's football team. Matthew knows the angels keep an eye on him.
