Late Night Angels
An Angel Friend
Vol. 2, No. 23 (November 20, 1999)
In March, I drove to Waco, Texas, to get my son who successfully completed a
two-year stay at a special school for children with behavioral problems. After attending
a play he was in, we packed his things and prepared to head home.
It was late and I thought of staying in a hotel. But I was eager to get home so
we headed on our way. After stopping for something to eat we'd been on the road
for about an hour when, around 11:30 p.m. a tire blew out.
I pulled to the side of the road and proceeded to get the jack. However, the
nut holding the jack to the floor of the trunk was so tight I couldn't get it
off. Panic quickly set in. We were in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the
grounds of a prison. I was very scared when all of a sudden I got this
peace in me. I said to myself that I'll just wait on God. He will provide.
In about five minutes this man pulled up out of nowhere and asked if we needed
some help.
I explained my situation. He told me he only had a minute because he had to be
at work. He supplied a wrench that enabled me to loosen the nut on the jack. I
thanked him and told him I'd be able to handle it from there. He left.
I got the jack and proceeded to change the tire. When I lowered the car off the
jack, I discovered that the spare was almost flat. Panic began to set in again.
I heard a voice in me ask, “Have you still not learned?”
I sat back again and put my trust in God. Within minutes, another man pulled up
and offered assistance. I asked him jokingly if he had an air pump. “I sure
do,” he said.
I was astonished as he inflated my tire. I told him that he was an angel and so
was the other man. He told me he was just trying to help out.
We made it to the next town, a distance of about 30 miles. We ended up spending
the night as the spare was one of those small tires with limited driving range.
The next morning when I awoke, I saw that there was a tire store directly
across the street from the hotel where I was able to have my tire repaired and
then head for home.
These were not coincidences: two men stopping in the middle of the night with
just the right tools and helping total strangers. I believe I met two angels
that night and that God saw us through this ordeal. The experience taught me
never to give up hope when things look bad. God is there ready to help if you
trust Him and give Him a chance to help you. Believe. He will do it.
