Angels in the Rain

Saturday Ramblins, Vol. 2, No. 19 (September 25, 1999)

I am a small town type person, and the saying, "you can take the girl out of the country but you can't take the country out of the girl," really fits my personality. To me a two-lane interstate at times can be an experience all in it's own right.

Recently, I left home around five a.m. and headed towards my destination, five hours away. As I drove, sprinkles of rain began to appear on my windshield. Mentally calculating my trip, much to my dismay, I realized I'd be smack dab in the center of Albany NY at the height of morning traffic,. I thought to myself, Why didn't you leave earlier as you had planed?

The closer to Albany I came, the heavier the rains came. By the time I arrived there, it was a toss up of which was thicker: the rain or the traffic.

In the middle of all this, traveling at 70 miles an hour and not being able to see more than two feet in front of me from the sprays of water off the vehicles in front of me, I thought, God, please let this rain stop, I can't see! This country girl was a bit unsettled with the situation (to say the least) and began thinking of exiting the interstate and sitting out the storm in peace. I started looking for the next exit to do just that when all of a sudden, traffic came to halt.

I could see! What I saw was that the rain basically had stopped and that the water on the interstate being thrown up by tires was what made visibility so poor.

My white knuckles relaxed on the steering wheel. Traffic moved slowly through all the normally congested areas around Albany. By the time I reached my exit from I-90, the rain had stopped completely and the sun began shinning.

Now tell me: was it my Guardian Angel clearing the way? Were my prayers graciously answered? Was it just at the time the storm would have ended anyway?

I know what I prefer to believe.
