2004 Stevne in Valdres, Norway

Quality Fagernes Hotel, Fagernes, Valdres, Norway
June 30 - July 4, 2004

VALDRES SAMBAND CHARTER TOUR TO VALDRES NORWAY 2004

An official committee has been appointed in Valdres, Norway, to work to improve relations between Valdres and America. The committee will be headed by Jahn Børe Jahnsen, Budstikken Valdres correspondent and Valdres Folkemuseum curator and archivist, and the other committee members are Ola N. Døvre, Valdres regional board chairman and North Aurdal township mayor, Jens Moberg, travel coordinator of Destination Valdres and Jotunheimen, and Turid Iversen key account manager of the Quality Fagernes Hotel. The advisory board is the other members from the 1999 centennial organizing committee, that is Bjørn Gunnar Østgård, Mona Dalen, Pål Prestesæter and Terje Mikael Hasle Joranger.

Among several goals the most important is to organize a new Valdres Samband stevne in Fagernes 2004, on a smaller scale than the centennial 1999, but aiming at something that can be repeated every fourth or fifth year. The committee is cooperating with Borton Overseas in America for the travel arrangements.

The 2004 program as it looks now is the following:

June 30: Arrival at the Gardermoen airport in Oslo and transfer by bus to Fagernes.

July 1: Optional whole day bus tour to Skrautvål, East Slidre, Etnedal and Aurdal.

July 2: Optional whole day bus tour of Aurdal and South Aurdal with Hedalen.

July 3: Optional whole day bus tour of Ulnes, West Slidre and Vang.

July 4. Service in the Ulnes church. Optional afternoon tour to the Bagn 1940 battle site.

For those not on tour there is a genealogy work shop every day at the Valdres Folkemuseum.

In the evenings there will be different sorts of entertainment at the hotel, with a banquet on Sunday evening.

Of course people are encouraged to visit relatives and ancestral farms when not on bus tours.

There will be more information about the 2004 Fagernes stevne at the Valdres Samband 2003 stevne in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, as members of the Norwegian committee will visit the Midwest June 14. – 22. We will then visit places like Mindekirken in Minneapolis, the Mount Horeb area, Vesterheim Museum in Decorah and St. Olaf college in Northfield in addition to the Eau Claire stevne. Other suggestions are appreciated.
