The Life of Alfred B. Wunluck
-
-
Alfred was born in 1922. His sister, Leona, was almost 7 years old
when Alfred was born. He was called Sonny to distinguish him from
his father. It was a name he grew to dislike. Alfred learned
the accordian and later the piano. Music was a large part of his
life. He joined bands in high school, and made some money working
in dance bands.

After high school, Al joined Commonwealth Edison Company as a clerk.
He married Dorothy Leimer, his high school sweetheart, on December 31,
1941. Shortly after I was born in January 1943, Al was called into
the Army Air Corps. He was trained as a radio operator and mechanic
on B-24 bombers. After basic training, he was sent to Tibenham
Air Base, Norfolk County, England, the 445th Bombardment Group. This
was the same group that Jimmie Stewart served in. Al volunteered
for every mission he could, so he could complete his requirements and return
home to his wife and son as early as possible. He flew 35 missions
over Germany and France. He was discharged in July 1945.

Al returned to work for Com Ed in 1945. He and Dorothy went on to
have 3 more children, Joy (1947), Mark (1953) and Wayne (1956). Al
continued in his music. He composed several songs and worked in bands
on weekends on into his late 60's. He retired from Com Ed when he
was 64 to concentrate on his bowling. Bowling was a love that he
shared with Dorothy through retirement.
