The Story Until Now...

June 1998
The Bearden Softball team is able to pull together and achieve a winning record. However, it soon fades quickly and we end up just one game under .500 to end out the year. In other news, the much anticipated movie event of the decade opens and Michael is first in line to see Mulder and Scully on the big screen. Debby takes a job at the YMCA being a life guard, where she learns to yell "Walk!" a whole lot at kids who are running when they shouldn't be.

July 1998

The Celebration design team gets together to continue planning the event for next year. Bible Study decides to look at Paul's letter to the Corinthians after finishing a mammoth study on Matthew. In sad news, Opal leaves to go to Florida. But the good news is she is beginning pharmacy school! We're sad to see her go but excited for her in her new opportunity. Marilyn Elam finally gets around to e-mailing us from her new Nashville home. And we start counting down the days to pre-season football...

August 1998

Who says only Bill Gates can upgrade every two years? In the fine tradition set by the Microsoft Corportation, the group decides it's time to upgrade, into a new and exciting, different program that's built on all the things that have made the young singles so strong and successful--namely, fellowship, love, support, hugs, lots and lots of food, and the dome of silence during new epiosdes of The X-Files. And so, as the new school year begins, the Generations of Bearden UMC emerges. We kick off our new group with a spaghetti lunch at church, cooked by Andy and Debby. Michael, meanwhile, gets the cushy job of announcing the lunch during church. In keeping with the Murphy's Law constant, a power outage the night before causes Michael's alarm not to go off and he misses the early service and making his announcement. Meanwhile, in an attempt to curb the usual, "Where are we going to lunch?" controversy that springs up each week, we decide to make out a schedule of eating establishments. Courtney and Sara return from from their summer vacations with new stories for the group.

September 1998

Once again, it's football time in Tennessee! Laughlin Smith graciously opens her home to the group for a kick-off party that is a whole bunch of fun. And the Vols manage to beat Syracuse on the last play of the game, which makes for an even better time! Leslie Wall visits our Sunday School for the first time and even goes to lunch with us! (This after visiting our web page!) Also, we keep up our tradition of going to Boomsday, which is once again spectacular. After weeks of hearing about her, we finally meet Julia Davis in person and she makes her mark on the group early, convincing Michael that having his face painted like a lizard would somehow be a good idea. (Don't ask for pictures! I'm web master and I'm not posting them! :-) ) The Vols beat the Gators and there is great rejoicing.

October 1998

Having not managed to frighten her enough at the church picnic, Julia becomes a more regular member of the group. Michael and Julia find new jobs and the group celebrates the good news like crazy. We go on our annual hayride and Michael drives the church van for the first time. Amazingly, we make it there and back in one piece. In other news, Debby manages to injur herself while watching TV...(don't ask!) Julia makes the plunge into church membership and singing in the choir.

November 1998

After what seems like six months since the movie, The X-Files finally has it's season premiere. We gather at Michael's house to watch and Emily makes the mistake of calling during the show....amazingly Michael is still speaking to her. The Vols survive Arkansas and go on to an undefeated season. Michael and Debby get to see Ms. Shania Twain in concert....

December 1998

Can it already be that it's the holiday time again? After the choir gives a spectalar Christmas cantata, we're all in the mood for the season. This mood quickly leaves when we fight traffic to get into West Town Mall to shop for the Angel Tree, which turns out to be quite an adventure. Somehow Michael loses Julia at Target during the shopping, a fact he will probably never live down. The first annual Christmas caroling party is a great success...

January 1999

It's great...to be...a Tennessee Vol! The Vols with the national championship and great rejoicing commences....Michael begins his yearly campaign about "hinting" that his birthday is coming. We celebrate Debby and Barry's b'days, trying to find a restaurant where the waiters will sing to them and embarass them....it doesn't quite work. On the other hand, the cool party hats do succeed....

Februrary 1999

For the third year in a row, we head off to Celebration. Tara makes a return visit to the group at Celebration. It's a great weekend for all of us. We run into tons of old friends and make new ones.

March 1999

Michael and Emily take over as the heads of Celebration. Scary thought, eh? The Lady Vols lose out of the regional finals in baskeball and don't make the final four in what seems like forever. The group goes into mourning. IN good news, Barry and Laura announce that Craig will become a big brother in October...

April 1999

Michael and Barry being counting down days until the new Star Wars movie opens...everyone else rolls their eyes.

May 1999

Michael waits in line four hours for Star Wars tickets..and it's all worth it! Star Wars finally opens and we all go...ah, the Force is back! Barry directs the children's production of Godspell which is a great sucess. Kevin makes a suprise visit. Debby, Tara and Jen graduate from college and there is rejoicing.

Summer 1999

It's a big summer for the group. Martin finished his master's degree at UT! Courtney and Jenn graduate from UTK. Julia gets good news when she is offered a great assistantship at one of the nation's premiere programs for her majors. Unfortunately, it's in California. In other sad news, Martin gets a job in North Carolina and Courtney follows her career path to Viriginia. Debby gets into med school in Kansas and Kevin transfers to Hiwassee College to play soccer. Todd gets a job as a school teacher as well. We hold a farwell party for them at Michael's and see just how many cars when can fit in his driveway. Craig Wallace is especially exited about the fact that we got to Miami Subs and Grills for lunch (his favorite restuarant). In other news, the softball goes up and down in the standings, but shows well and has fun. Martin quotes the famous episodes of "Friends" about going "Red Ross" at the plate and a new catch phrase is born!

September 1999

Thankfully, it's football time in Tennesee again! Now it's on to the work of defending our national title...but the Vols run into a speed bump in the Swamp, losing to Florida...sigh...But there is a good time had by all at the softball team party during the game at the McKenzie's. In other news, the group changes names yet again to the Young Adults of Bearden UMC. And our Sunday School class takes an exciting, active role in the visioning process at Bearden UMC...
And in good news, our group grows a bit as the Wallace welcome Erin Wallace to the world...
