Nearby, though, the population lives as it has for centuries, in subsistance agriculture, trying to make a living out of the rocky soil. Often, animal husbandry is the only viable type of farming in this Hellers community.
It is in communities such as High Crags that visitors can catch a glimpse of the reality of the typical Darkovan contrast between the comfortable rich and the everyday working family. The village today has only 45 residents.
