The Known GREENFIELD Family History

as compiled by Lawrence D. Weisberg

June 1997

F. GREENFIELD (possibly Frank) (my great-great-great-grandfather) first appears in the United States in the 1880 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, county and City of Philadelphia at 1337 Second Street, East Side on June 1, 1880 (enumeration district 310/page 2).

Accordingly, he is listed as 53-years old, born in Hungary during either the latter-half of 1826 or the earlier-half of 1827. His occupation is that of ‘Watchmaker’. He has been married 33-years to Sarah (nee?) who is listed as being 50-years old, born in Hungary during either the latter-half of 1830 or the earlier-half of 1831. Her occupation is that of ‘Keeping House".

As of 1880, they have five children, all Hungarian-born: Anna (or Hanna) [my great-great-grandmother], age 24, born during either the latter-half of 1855 or the earlier-half of 1856, Marse (as son), age 20, born during either the latter-half of 1859 or the earlier-half of 1860, Paul, age 18, born during either the latter-half of 1861 or the earlier-half of 1862, Josephine, age 16, born during either the latter-half of 1863 or the earlier-half of 1864, and Clara, age 8, born during either the latter-half of 1871 or the earlier-half of 1862. Anna is a dressmaker and sons Marse and Paul are watchmakers like their father.

They could not be found in the 1881, 1883, or 1884 City Directories for Philadelphia.

Paul Greenfield (along with his widowed mother, Sarah) appears in the 1888 Directory, still living at 1337 N. Second Street. He has a business (or is in business ) of ‘varieties’ at 234 Girard.

In the 1892 Directory, he is listed at 131 N. Second, but he also appears in a business listing, under the name "Greenfield & Weisberg" at 11 N. Second Street (the Weisberg in question is Louis WEISBERG, Paul’s brother-in-law who married his eldest sister, Anna).

In the 1895 Directory, both he and Louis appear to be living together at 405 S. Third Street. The business is still at 11 N. Second.

Paul GREENFIELD’s next appearance is in the 1900 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, county and city of Philadelphia at 2029 S. Fourth Street, June 2, 1900 (enumeration district 992/sheet 1B).

Accordingly, he is listed as 35-years old, born in July 1864. His father (F. GREENFIELD) is now listed as Poland for place of birth. His immigration is listed as 1876. His occupation is listed as ‘Hardward Merchant’. He has been married 1.5-years (latter-half of 1898 or earlier-half of 1899) to Irene (nee ?) who is listed as being 21-years old, born in Poland (of a Polish father and an Austria-Hungarian mother) during the month of October 1878. Her immigration is 1898. Also living with them is Paul’s now-widowed mother, Sarah, age 70, born in January 1830. She was married 53 years, having 9 children, of which 7 survived.

As of 1900, they have two sons: Isaac Newton [my great-grandfather], age 17, born in Philadelphia during the month of July 1882, and William Morris, age 11, born in Philadelphia during the month of April 1889.

The WEISBERG family next appear in a 1908 Directory for the city of Philadelphia. Hanna is listed as a widow (Louis evidently dies sometime between June 2, 1900 and 1908), living at 2553 N. 28th Street with her youngest son, Wm. Morris. Isaac Newton is living at 3234 Page (he has wed as described in the coming 1910 Census). The company of "Greenfield & Weisberg" seems to have been dissolved. Paul GREENFIELD now has a business that deals in ‘willow-ware’ (baskets) located at 53 N. Second Street. There is also a listing for "L. Weisberg Co." at 142 N. Second Street that deals in furnishings. This may or may not be my great-great-grandfather’s company, but it is still located with a few blocks of the old "Greenfield & Weisberg", not to mention Paul GREENFIELD’s current business.

In the 1909 Directory for the city of Philadelphia, Hanna is no longer listed by herself and Wm. Morris has moved to 3217 Fontain Street. In the 1910 Directory for the city of Philadelphia, "L. Weisberg Co." has moved to 165 N. Second Street. Paul GREENFIELD’s business is now listed as ‘baskets’.

In the 1911 Directory, Hanna and Wm. M. are again listed together.

As of the 1910 U.S. Census, in the state of Pennsylvania, city of Philadelphia, Anna (Hannah) WEISBURG (note spelling change) is the head of the household, living at 3217 Fontain Street, as of April 21, 1910 (district 778/ sheet 10B). She is now 52-years old, born in July (per the 1900 Census) 1857 (a 11-years older than in 1900). Her year of immigration is listed as 1876 (no year was given in 1900). She is a widow, as previously reported in the 1908 City Directory.

Also living with her is Morris (formerly, Wm. Morris) now age 21 and still single. His occupation is that of 'storekeeper' (possibly the L. Weisberg Co.). This is Anna's last appearance that I have found. With her passing (presumably between 1910 and 1920), the GREENFIELDs are carried on by Paul (who has no descendants that I know of) and the other son, Marse (who I have no information on whatsoever).

The family which continues on, for all intents and purposes, are now known as WEISBERG.
