THE FIRST HUNDRED
This article was printed in THE BRYAN PRESS April 25 1889.The following is an excerpt from the article that may be helpful to those of us looking for our Williams County Civil War ancestors.
The following are the names of men who flew to arms at the first call for troops after the firing upon Fort Sumpter,April 12 ,1861,just twenty-eight years ago ,by Beauregard, under command of the rebel government. The shot fired the country and as soon as the telegraph could carry the news to the people, men hastened to the villages and enrolled for the service. Saturday, the 19th,a hundred names were enrolled at Bryan and about an equal number at Stryker, though we believe the Stryker company was not accepted. The Bryan company was accepted and the next Tuesday,April 23rd,the company organization was complete and the orders to march to join the regiment, the 14th Ohio,at Toledo, had been received. The company was formed in single file to the north side of court square, was brought to a front facing High St and the women of Bryan presented them a silk flag, and each man was given a small Bible. Immediately after the presentation of the Bibles the company marched to the depot and was soon on board the cars. The train remained at the deport some minutes and the boys crowded the windows to say a last good-bye to their friends, and to exchange with them tokens of affections. There were the father and mother, brothers, sisters, wives, and sweethearts, many of them crying, others were striving hard to prevent the unbidden tear from being seen. The train moved out and hats were waved from the car windows and handkerchiefs fluttering over the crowd at the depot answered back and farewell.
