ALFRED HARRIS
Alfred was born Oct 5 1841 in Marston-Moretyne, Bedfordshire, England. He was christened in at St. Mary the Virgin Church of England on 18 April 1850. He immigrated in 1850 with his parents to Springfield Twp., Williams County, Ohio.
This Alfred was another small Harris man. He was 5'4" with a light complexion,light hair and blue eyes.
He was 22 years when he enlisted in the Army on March 4 1864 at Toledo,Ohio. He served in the 38th Reg O.V.V.I. Company H. under Capt.Charles Kent.March 19th 1864 he was paid his enlistment allowance of $13.00 in Liberty twp.,Henry County. On the 29th of March he was assigned to his Company serving under Capt.A.Newmann. April and May was spent apparently marching through the south fighting many battles.
On May 28 1864 he was assigned to the field hospital for fever.Then to the General Hospital #1 in Chattanooga,Tenn.He had the hospital number of 7561.
On June 11 1864 he passed away from a remittent fever. He was laid to rest at 186 Sec E N.E. Section on grounds of the Military Hospital,Chattanooga,Tenn. with full honors.
He had no personal effects at the time of his death,but he had pay entitled to him in the amount of $ 240.00. His obituary was reported in the Bryan Union Press on Aug 11 1864.
