"Benjamin Braswell died in 1792. His estate was not settled until 1809. His
wife was Mary Bullock. In the estate settlement are named daughter Celia, wife
of Samuel Ruffin, now both deceased leaving children: Lamon Ruffin, Milly
Ruffin, Patsy Ruffin, Frederick Ruffin, Gray Ruffin, Wright Ruffin, Benjamin
Ruffin, and Polly Ruffin. All eight children of Samuel Ruffin and Celia
Braswell are listed as minors with William Wilkins as their guardian."
"If they are minors, then the oldest child could not have been born before
1788 . Lamon is shown in the 1840 census as 40-50 (born 1790-1800), in 1850 he
is Lemon, age 67 (born 1783), in the 1860 census he is Duncan age 74 (born
1786). All these ages and dates are in the time frame but don't relate to each
other. My best number is that he was born in 1788 making him 52 in 1840, 62 in
1850 and 72 in 1860."
"Further proof that this is the same person is that Lamon Ruffin married
Theresa White, 9 Jan 1813. She was 18 and he was 23. In the 1850 census there
is Lemon and wife Creasy (she was called "Treasy"), she is 55. This is
correct. They have three sons, one of which is Robert who is eight years old.
In 1860 Lamon is called Dukan and wife Theresa with a child Robert who is 18
years old."
"There is no doubt that this man, Duncan Lamon Ruffin is the same Lamon that
is the son of Samuel and Celia. And the only Gray Ruffin available to marry
Nancy Bailey in 1833 is the one listed in Benjamin Braswell's estate. This
Gray (according to the guardian's accounts) is still a minor in 1822 & 1832.
This would mean that he was born about 1809 or 1811, but the estate was 1809,
so he would not really be a minor in 1832. Sometimes, the guardian accounts
were listed in one year for previous years."
"In the 1840 census, only one Gray appears. Since he died in 1848, he is shown
as 40-50. This is more accurate than the guardian accounts."
"Their brother Wright is also listed in 1840 as being 30-40 and Benjamin is
listed as 20-30. This brings all the males back to the 1809 era, give or take
a year or two. Frederick, the other brother died in 1824, not married."
"Now, if you are thinking that there might be some confusion about these sons
of Samuel and Celia and the sons of Benjamin Ruffin and Sarah Bullock, I can
rule them out quickly. Gray Ruffin, Son of Benjamin Ruffin and Sarah Bullock
married Rebecca Sturdivant in 1812 (much to soon for Gray and Nancy.) She
divorced in 1826. Lamon Ruffin, brother of Gray Ruffin and son of Benjamin and
Sarah died 11 Mar 1836 - can't be Duncan Lamon Ruffin. He is probably the
Lamon Ruffin that married Elizabeth Jones in 1829 and Elizabeth Powell in
1832. I don't have proof of that though."
