William was a Major, C.S.A. under General Joseph Wheeler. David White Ruffin, known as "White", remembers his father as being rather weak in physique.

Sallie is d/o David Shelton White b. 1814 and Catherine Rucker from Elbert County, GA (born August 27, 1817 in Elbert County, GA and died July 30, 1846 in Como, Panola County, Mississippi)
buried in the McGehee Cemetery (six miles west of Como) (overgrown and tombstones destroyed)
According to a letter from David Alexander Ruffin to Olie Low Garrett in 1993, William Ruffin, son of James D. Ruffin was a roommate with his father James (Room 1, Madison Hall) in 1853-1854 at the University of Mississippi. In 1854-1855, William was enrolled in the school of Modern Languages, Chemistry, and Moral Philosophy at the University of Virginia.
According to Ann Ruffin Floyd, William Ruffin and Sallie White first moved to Covington from Memphis during the Yellow Fever Epidemic that was rampant in Memphis.
