Carmel was a child of James M Steele and Laura Zikerider. He was born at Sandy Landing near Dagsboro on the Indian River. The house no longer stands. He used to take care of Sailing ships as a teenager. He died in Hollywood Florida. He like to go fishing. He was in the newspaper once dated Friday, July 24, 1970 in the Beachcomer. The article was titled "Meet the man who catches the fish? by Mike Schultz.
At that time Carmel was 85 years old. He had lived onthe Fenwick island for the last 20 years and fished nearly all his life. he preferred the beach to go fishing instead of the boat. Pompano were his favorite fish. He also caught at one time a 50-pound angel fish that made the news.
Estella, his wife, quoted that "The day our son was born he caught seven big fish? Carmel commented they were seven drum. On that particular morning there were 60 men lined up on the beach and he was only one to catch fish. In fact, the other men were coming up to him and asking him to throw their lines out for them. As the article continues they mention the bird Tony. Tony escaped one day. Mrs Steele said they put an advertisement in the paper and a day or two the bird was brought back. "The man said Tony had flown up to them and stayed near them. Tony said, "My name is Tony Steele." The man said he knew then that someone must be looking for that bird."

He was born at Mayo,MD. on the western shore of Md. He moved to Oxford with his family at the age of 5. He attended school in Oxford MD till his junior year. The family moved to Ocean View, DE, when he was 16. He went into the service during World War II and went into the Navy. One of the ships he was on was called Alabaster, a Dupont Yacht, a PT boat. Went abroad it around Cape May, NJ.
