The Bodhisattvas' Column

By Allen Adams ()

Elizabeth Clare Prophet (hereafter referred to as Mother) in remarks given before Padmasambhava's sombhava's dictation at Freedom 1996 gave a short instruction on Guru Yoga. She quoted from a book by Dilgo Khyentse, The Wish-fulfilling Jewel:The Practice of Guru Yoga According To The Logchen Nyingthig Tradition. I obtained my copy from the Golden Braid bookstore. (In Salt Lake City, it could be ordered through any bookstore even the ranch may carry it.)

Dilgo Khyentse instructs us that the practice should begin by visualizing ourselves as Yeshe Tsogyal. (This was identified in one the South American Stump dictations as an embodiment of Mother's.)

"The visualization of ourselves as Yesha Tsogal is particularly important and profound. She was both Guru Rinpoche's [ Spiritual ] consort and his chief disciple. He had deep loving- kindness a toward her, as well as a great confidence in her ability to understand and implement his teachings. Thus we visualize our selves as Yeshse Tsogyal, with Guru Rinpoche dwelling upon the crown of her head, naturally our devotion will be strongly enhanced and the stream of blessings will flow more swiftly into us.

"Who, actually was Yeshe Tsogyl? She never entertained any wrong views or doubts about Guru Rinpoche even for a single instant and always perceived him as the Buddha in person. Because of her total and unshakable devotion she was a perfect vessel for all of Guru Rinpoche's precious instructions. Thus she was able to practice flawlessly and to attain perfect realization. Ultimately, there was no difference between her realization and that of Guru Rinpoche.

"Visualizing our selves as Yeshe Tsogyal creates an auspicious connection through which we can receive, like Yeshe Tsogyal, all the blessings and teachings of Guru Rinpoche, and which will enable us to practice them and to obtain enlightenment. She is perceived as being the mother of all buddhas ( Prajnaparamita ) and, just as in a family where the children have a great affection for their mother, we should think that all buddhas have great love and affection for us.

"Above the crown of our head, upon a lotus of one thousand petals,... is seated our guru in the form of Guru Rinpoche, in whom all objects of refuge are one. In outward aspect he is the union of the three jewels: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. In inner aspect he is the union of the three roots: Guru, Yidam and Dakini. (The Guru is the root of blessings, the Yidam is the root of accomplishment, and the Dakini of activity.) In secret aspect he is the union of the three kayas: Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya. In nature he is our kind root teacher who, in this present life, is granting us all the instructions.

"Guru Rinpoche has complete wisdom, loving kindness, and ability. We must realize that even a single prayer to Guru Rinpoche, the recitation of a single Vajra Guru mantra calling upon him, or even the raising of a single hand toward our heart in gesture of devotion toward him or simply remembering him with clear faith, will be perceived by him, for he has full knowledge of our devotion. As it is said, 'The Buddha dwells in front of whosoever has faith in him.'

"This is the promised of Guru Rinpoche, who, as the emanation of the body, speech, and mind of all the buddhas (especially Beloved Jesus) manifested especially to meet the needs of the beings of this decadent age (our present age). His prayers and compassion have a great efficacy in the alleviation of the epidemics, famines, and wars that beset this age." p. 20-27, The Wish Fulfilling Jewel. [The comments in parenthesis are mine. ]

We should remember that Padmasambhava has been identified by the Ascended Master Jesus Christ as his disciple and that we get to the Heart of Jesus by becoming one with the heart of Padmasambhava.

It is easy to see how this meditation could increase the efficacy of our decrees and calls. We were asked at one time recently ( the Freedom 1992 conference?) to begin each service with the Golden Mantra (identified in the text above as the Vajra Guru Mantra), 33 times.

If we could each imagine ourselves as Mother, and then give our devotions (with the master of the decree at our crown) accelerated by the presence of the Messenger, we would make an acceleration in our pursuit of our individual victory, the victory of the Messenger, and the victory of the planet. We would have the karma of bringing in the New Age, which might be enough to win our ascension.

A few years ago at Camelot we were given a mantra by Beloved El Morya that we could use to draw closer to our guru: "I AM the Guru where I AM." During the recent stump to South America we received another mantra to be one with the Messenger and to place Mother's Presence where we were: "I AM the Messenger where I AM."

If we conjoined the recitation of either of these mantras with the practice of guru yoga described above we would certainly benefit ourselves, our guru, and the mission of the Three Jewels. I suggest if you realize that you need to put more fire into your decrees to bring about the necessary action, this practice as a preparatory ritual would be beneficial. Include also a prayer for the fire of the hearts and the throat chakra of the Messenger. Both Lord Shiva and Kuan Yin have manifestations with "Blue Throats". Call to them also.

Look for future articles on: the Bodhisattva ideal and Path, developing Bodhicitta and Compassion, the parallel paths of the Christ and Buddha, reviews of the Pearls of Wisdom and Sutras regarding the Bodhisattva ideal and path, and evidence that Jesus was a Buddhist.

If anyone wants a bibliography on the Bodhisattva path let me know. There are two english translations of the Bodhisattvacaryavatara available now. There is also a commentary on the Bodhisattvacaryavatara by H.H the Dali Lama which is very illuminating. All three are easy to read, but difficult to implement, without great Bodhicitta.)

Love to all!
