Facts about Great Blue Herons
1. Large, long-necked, long-legged, long billed birds.
2. Largest herons living in North America.
3. Stands at a height of 4 1/2 feet and weighs around 4 pounds.
4. Their color is gray, blue, brown and white.
5. Their diet consists of fish, frogs, salamander larvae, insects, small mammals such as mice, and squirrels.
6. They stalk their prey carefully or stand and wait for it.
7. Food is swallowed whole.
8. They have lived on the earth for about 40 million years.
9. They live around lakes, and marshes.
10. Nests are six to eight feet in diameter, made of sticks and broomstraw.
11. Nests are built in the tops of trees towering 60 to 80 feet.
12. They may law 3 to 7 eggs.
