the bitter and the sweet

i live a hundred lives, silent and unseen
my heart is shattered ten thousand times
all around, the world falls down, and i stand still
uncounted minds, like the stars in the sky
i walk the slender tethers between unknowns
a testament to suffering, unwilling solitude

feelings and desires you cannot hide from me
like an open book i turn the pages of your mind
i learn with you, laugh with you, cry with you
i look into your eyes, and i see through your facade
all your joys and sorrows, your hopes and fears
your darkest secrets are those i have always known

i would be the eye of your hurricane, calm and still
when someone strikes you, and you want to lash out
but strangers crowd around and you hold it in
i look into your eyes, and i leap into the storm
your struggle is made plain, no longer yours alone
strength i cannot share until you see through me

i am your deepest fear and your fondest wish
the misplaced treasure and the inescapable choice
unremarkable unobtrusive unexciting unlovely
i escape your notice, like the stars in the sky
in your eyes for an endless moment i am you
i drink in your life, i taste the bitter and the sweet
