Our final port of call was Skagway, Alaska. We came in on a gray and rainy morning with low hanging clouds all about. Our schedule called for us to take the White Pass and Yukon Railroad trip up along the Chilkoot trail. We were not too optimistic about it, but decided to go anyway despite the offer of our money back due to the very bad weather.
As it turned out, the excursion was just wonderful. Despite the low clouds and rain, we had some wonderful views of the mountains shrouded in the fog and rain and there were several magnificent waterfalls along the way. Coming back down, the clouds did lift enough to give us spectacular views most of the way back.
Skagway itself was an interesting place with perhaps some of the flavor of frontier Alaska still hanging on. The National Parks center offers a lot of interesting history on both Skagway and the Gold Rush of '98. Worth the time spent there. Walking around town is fun and pretty easy as there is only one main street. It is, of course, "touristy," but if you squint your eyes right, you can sense how it was at the turn of the century and it was still all wild and wooly.
