NOTE: From "THE SWANSON HISTORY" by Pansy S. Stokes:
The Swanson History was compiled in 1953, and then revised in 1957. It was not until 1960 that we had information from A. L. Poe of Lenoir, who is an authority on many family histories, that he had found evidence that "William Swanson married Elizabeth Stalions in 1777." Later also we corresponded with some of the Swansons of Wake County, where our ancestors originally come from, who sent us a photostatic copy of this same marriage bond.

This then may be considered as a correction of t he 1957 record which has been placed in the hands of others of the Swanson Family.

Mrs. Beatrice Ivaster of Kernersville, NC, and her sister, Mrs. Mary Lynan (now deceased) of Greenland, New Hampshire, descendants of Calvin Swanson of the Boomer section of Wilkes County, NC, advised:

Richard and Olive Swanson came from Virginia but they have never been able to establish the time or place of their arrival into North Carolina; and that Richard and Olive Swanson were the parents of William and John and probably Phillip and Edward Swanson.

NOTE: A letter written to Clyde Swanson, in Virginia, February 8, l962 from Greenland, New Hampshire:
Dear Clyde, I hop that this will not be too great a shock to you, but I have intended to write you for sometime. Forrest sent me your address and I am now in position to follow through by writing. I am working on a genealogy of the descendants of John Swanson, and need your help. It is a most interesting project and I hope it may result in a brief account of John Swanson and his descendants in a small book or in mimeographed form so that a number of copies may be available. The information that I need from you is your father and mother's full names, dates of birth, marriage, deaths. The names of their children with the dates of birth and marriage, to whom married and the names of the parents and then your children with the same dates, and so on to the latest generation.
For instance, Mac and Eloise are now great grandparents and Lana's child is the 8th generation from John Swanson. You are the fifth, the same that I am. I am trying to complete the descendents of Richard Calvin as rapidly as I can, and then we can begin the more difficult task of finding the descendants of James Swanson's son Anderson, married to Sarah Brown in Wilkes County in 1839, and of the sisters of Richard Calvin, some of whom are Annie, Hiley, Polly, Frances and Clariaa. These last two never married. If you have any help to offer with these I will deeply appreciate it.
John Swanson was born in Edgecombe County, NC on April 14, 1761. When he was 12 the family moved to Wake County, NC and it was from there that he entered the Revolutionary army of General Greene and served with Dixon's company being mustered out in May, 1782.. He returned to Wake county and was married there on February 11, 1784 to Betsey Clifton. James Swanson, our great grandfather, was born to them on December 10, 1784. They moved to Lincoln County, NC and we find them there in 1790 with one boy and two girls. Around 1806 okr '7 John Swanson moved to Wilkes County. We do not know whether Betsey Clifton Swanson was still living or not at that time. We do know that they had six children. The boys were James , John, Richard, and the girls were Nancym who married James McGhinnis and their son Ephraim Brevard McGhinnis married Susannah Swanson, daughter of James Swanson and become the mother of Thomas, Vance and a daughter at least. The second girl, Disey married Peter Eddlman and the third, Penina married William Walker and moved to Missouri.
We could use a lot of help on these. Young John Swanson was married to Polly Lankford in 1819 in Wilkes County, and an Isaac Swanson was a witness. This Isaac was in all probability the son of William Swanson who married Elizabeth Stalions in Wake County in September, 1777. We find him in Wilkes in 1790 with one son and six daughters. We know nothing of Richard, John's third son.
Knowing that Uncle Fayett had both time and wide ranging interests, I thought that possibly you might have some family records that could help in unraveling some of this puzzle and fitting the bits and pieces together. I will deeply appreciate your help. I have written to Nelson Andrews, Ray Barlow, Nellie Carlton, and a number of others for information and help in this. It is proving a rather large undertaking, but one I feel is well worth doing, and which should be done as quickly as possible.
Back in 1958 I suffered a very slight stroke which with a number of complications has confined me to the house since and mostly to my chair, but I find that I can do a great many things which I can do sitting down. The genealogy has interested me for a long time. I did some work on it some 20 odd years ago, but I do not carry through with it at that time. Now I should like to complete it as much as I possibly can and make it available in a limited way to the family.
My husband is the minister of the Congregational Church here in Greenland and we have lived here for the last twelve years, and shall probably be here until we retire. He is interested in genealogy and local history and helps me with the letter writing somewhat.
We do not know who John Swanson's father was. Do you? We also know that he married the second time, Sary McScotister or McAlister, but Vance McGhinnis wrote me in 1941 that John Swanson married his grandfather James McGhinnis's sister Sallie. If you have any light to shed here please do.
I should like Grace's address tool I have not heard from her or of her for many years and I would like very much to write her. I am aware that I am asking you for a good deal and that it will make some work for you, but I will greatly appreciate your help. I am inclosing a stamped and self-addressed envelope for your convenience and I hope you will write me as early as possible. I want to complete the Richard Calvin Swanson descendants quickly which is the easiest part, and then I will have to move on to the other branches of the family. Any helps or leads tht you may have in the suggested area will be most helpful. by the second marriage John had two sons, Luther and William Rufus. Luther did not marry, but Rufus did and had children who did visit Vance and Thomas McGhinnis.
Looking forward to hearing from you and trusting that you and yours are well, I am, with the very best wishes always,
Sincerely yours,
Mary Swanson Lynam
P.S. When Forrest looked up your address in the telephone directory he also sent the addresses of other Swansons in Roanoke. Do you know them and can you tell us about them? It may be that some of them are of the Virginia branch, descendants of a William Swanson who was at age 57 and with a John Swanson Age 20 swearing allegiance to Virginia in 1777. They were not our William and john, but were in all likel9ihood ancestors of Claude Augustus.

PLAC Collier's Methodist Church

A new Collier's Methodist Church had just been constructed. Claudia and Punk (C.P.) were the first to be married there. The night after their wedding there was a fire which destroyed the church. When it was rebuilt, it was called the Old Collier's Methodist Church which it has remained throughout the years.

After attending Applachain State Teacher's College, Boone, NC - which is now Applachain State University - There was a fire in the Administration Building which destroyed her college records along with many others.

Claudia taught High School English for many years at Hudson High School. She taught her brothers , Gordon and Dan, who were twelve and eight years younger, respectively. After leaving the high school she began working with Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute as it first began in the County. She remained with CCC&TI until she retired shortly before her death.
