Following is a brief description of depression, anxiety disorders,
and schizophrenia along with a few useful links for anyone
interested in these disorders....
Depression
It is normal from time to time to feel unhappy with life, this feeling may
be triggered by a disappointment at work, home, or in a relationship,
or may even come about with you knowing why. It is also normal to go
through spells in which you are very happy with life and seem to
have no problems at all. There are however mood 'disorders' such as
depression, mania, and bi-polar disorder (manic-depressive) which
are extreme cases of these normal feelings and last for longer periods
of time. Symptoms of depression can include:
poor appetite
insomnia
lethargy
feelings of worthlessness
loss of interest in family, friends, and activites
depression crosses the line from 'normal' to 'major' if these symptoms
are present for more than two weeks and seem to have no
notable cause.

Anxiety
Everyone experiences a little anxiety at one time or
another such as when speaking to a room full of
people or anticipating a job interview, but for some people-
two-thirds of them women- anxiety becomes so distressing
and debilitating that it is classified as an 'anxiety disorder'. There
are three type of anxiety disorders: generalized anxiety, phobic
disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder can include:
dizziness
heart palpitations
edginess
sweaty palms
ringing in the ears
The cause of an anxiety disorder can not be identified by
the person suffering from it, and therefore can not be
avoided. People with generalized anxiety
also suffer from 'panic attacks' in which they experience
chest pain, dizziness, trembling, choking or smothering sensations,
and fainting. These attacks last for several minutes and are
so terrifying that the sufferer may then avoid situations where attacks
have occurred.
Phobic disorders are irrational fears of specific objects, situations, or
activities. Some common phobia's include: spiders, mice, high places,
going out of the house, dogs, flying , and being closed in.
Phobias are very common and most people just accept and
live with them. There are however some phobic disorders that
are incapacitating.
Obsessive-Compulsive disorder
Everyone is at times obsessed with senseless thoughts that will
not go away, or displays a compulsion to engage in some type of
rigid behavior such as lining up your pencils just so before
studying, stepping over cracks in sidewalks, ect..
Obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors become a 'disorder' however
when they begin to interfere with your life and cause distress.

Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a debilitating disease with symptoms including:
hallucinations-usually auditory
paranoia
delusions
inappropriate emotions and actions
disorganized thinking
Paranoid symptoms include the patient thinking that people are
spying on him, following him, or can read his thoughts. Delusions include
the patient thinking that everything involves him/her or that
they are someone else (a famous person, cartoon character...). Schizophrenics
thoughts are disorganized so that they may skip from one subject
to a totally unrelated one, and may not be able to be understood by anyone.
Inappropriate emotions could include for example, laughing while speaking
of something sad.
