I have loved animals all my life. For the past twenty five years I have been involved and dedicated to the breeding, rearing and public education of the Chinese Shar Pei. I consider myself a professional in this field which involves genetics,
nutrition and canine behaviour. I constantly strive to upgrade my skills
insofar as pedigree research and breeding setbacks, and feel my nursing
background and the understanding of canine nutrition has contributed greatly
to the understanding of this breed. In dedicating my
life to the preservation of the breed, I believe I am continually working
towards my ultimate goal of educating the public about the Chinese Shar
Pei. The breeding of the Chinese Shar Pei is an art
that very few people grasp on to. It doesn't stop at that picture perfect
puppy you just bought or are about to buy. MUCH time with respect to researching
pedigrees and lines, much cost to a keep a breeding program healthy and
honest discontinuance of lines with genetic imbalances at all costs to
a breeder, sometimes involving great financial setbacks - much devotion...
hours of caring, supporting, breeding, delivering to ensure the raising
of healthy sound puppies that will, hopefully, bring you a lifetime of
happiness. Breeding is an art and every breeder paints
their own landscape, as a public if you like the artwork you will buy it.
As a breeder, I am responsible for all aspects of my breeding program -
the health and welfare of my bitches and stud dogs both before and after
breeding, the responsibility of pups and bitches at birth, before and after
weaning and the placement of pups in their new homes, plus followups and
consultations with new owners to ensure the proper care is to be given.I
look at all breeding animals both genetically (what's on the inside) and
phenotypically (what's on the outside). I consider myself a geneticist
for my breeding program - able to research and understand my pedigrees,
a nutritionist - able to choose a diet best suited for my dogs, a health
care aid - able to recognize health problems a vet assistant/nurse for
the general health care of my animals, a breeding expert - as I have successful
breedings with all my stud dogs/ bitches - a midwife - for the birthing
of my puppies and the assisting of my bitch to raise them, a dog trainer/behaviour
analyst - for carefull puppy assessment for temperament and personality
and lastly a teacher - for teaching and education on raising, health and
care of the breed. Shar Pei Canadiana is a small kennel, and all our dogs and puppies are raised in the house. I usually have no more than a dozen adult shar pei at any given time. I place my bitches in pet homes between 5 and 6 years of age, for 2 reasons, firstly this allows them to continue the rest of their life with someone that cares, in an environment free of other shar pei and puppies, and secondly, it is an overbearing heartache to loose my veterans, and this just makes it a little less painful.
