Reverend James Smart was born October 13, 1714 in Prince George Co., Va. and died about 1788 in Beaufort District, S.C. He was the first pastor of the Coosawhatchie Baptist Church, later renamed Beech Branch Baptist Church. According to church records the children of Rev. Smart and his wife Elizabeth Ledbetter were:
Of the eight children there is evidence of only the last three. James Smart, Jr. stayed in South Carolina in what is now Allendale County. Nathan Smart moved to Liberty Co., Georgia. His descendants are spread throughout the southeast United States. Chloe Smart married Zachariah Knight. They, too, moved to Liberty County. Their descendants migrated into Florida. My name is Johnna Josey Davis. I wrote a book about the Smart descendants entitled "From Coosawhatchie to Liberty, the Descendants of Reverend James Smart and Levi Long". The Long family is an allied line who, also, moved from South Carolina to Liberty Co., Georgia. I consider this book to be unfinished and I periodically do updates.
