The New Hampshire Conference of the United Church of Christ, with its 154 local churches, is part of a nationwide faith community of over 6400 churches, gathered in 39 Conferences, which make up the United Church of Christ
The New Hampshire Conference stands in the heritage of the Congregational Christain Churches and the Evangelical and Reformed Church, which joined in 1957 to form the United Church of Christ. In particular, our roots began with the Congregationalists of England, who arrived in this country in 1620.
The Constitution of the United Church of Christ describes the function of a Conference: "to do those things which strengthen the witness of the local churches of the United Church of Christ as well as to maintain relationships with other Christian fellowships within its boundaries, fostering mutual understanding and cooperation."
The Conference includes eight Associations of churches, each in a particular geographical area of our state: Carroll-Strafford, Cheshire, Grafton-Orange, Hillsborough, Merrimack, North Country, Rockingham and Sullivan.
Associations are responsible for determining and certifying the standing of ordained, commissioned and licensed ministers in the United Church of Christ. An Association also determines and certifies the standing of local churches as churches of the United Church of Christ.
