7128. 1. Chase, Sherman. I do not think it has ever been found who the wives of William (2) Chase, Jr., were. By his second wife (name unknown) he had son, Joseph (3), who married Sarah (3) Sherman, Feb. 8, 1694, daughter of Samson (2) and Isabel (Tripp) Sherman (Hon. Philip 1). Another son (my ancestor), Samuel (3) Chase, married also a Sarah Sherman, daughter of Samuel (2) and Martha (Tripp) Sherman (Hon. Philip 1). The above Sarah, daughter of Samson Sherman, named a child Samson Chase; also another Isabel Chase, which shows she was the daughter of Samson Sherman. Isabel and Martha Tripp were sisters and daughter of John (1) Tripp of Portsmouth, R. I., and wife, Mary (Paine) Tripp. I think someone placed the wrong Sarah Sherman, daughter of Peleg, as wife of Joseph Chase; no doubt because the age agreed with date of marriage, but this is not proof enough. I refer to wills, deeds, Bibles or other good authority.

2. Chase, Buffington. Stephen (4) Chase, son of Joseph (3) (William 2, William 1) and Sarah (Sherman) Chase, born March 2, 1708, married, first Esther (3) Buffington, Nov. 11, 1728, daughter of Benjamin (2) and Hannah (___) Buffington (Thomas 1); married, second wife, Bathsheba Stafford, 1751; third wife, Abigail Potter, 1769; fourth wife, Nancy Bushnell, January 1776; no issue.

Children by Esther, first wife: Hannah, born Dec. 22, 1729, married Joseph Slade July 25, 1747; Sarah, born Sept. 18, 1731, married Jonathan Luther Jan. 16, 1752; Esther, born Aug. 5, 1733, married Thomas Earl Nov. 1, 1753; Susanna, born Nov. 1, 1735, married Daniel Wood May 30, 1752; Benjamin, born Nov. 29, 1737, married Mehitable Wood; Stephen, born Feb. 3, 1740, married (perhaps) Hannah Blithen of Swansea, Mass., 1760; Joseph, born, Feb. 13, 1742; Asa, born June 4, 1744, married Deborah Baker, daughter of Ebenezer; Jethro, born June 4, 1746; Peace, born June 5, 1748, married Daniel Baker, Nov. 26, 1767; Comfort, born Nov. 10, 1750, married Samuel Upton Feb. 18, 1773.

The mother, Esther (Buffington) Chase, died 1750, after birth of child; the above-named Buffingtons, Slades, Luthers, Woods and Bakers all intermarried into my family lines.

Thomas Buffington, son of William, came to New England in 1639; he first settled in Salem, Mass., removed to Swansea, Mass.; his will was proved Nov. 11, 1729; married Sarah Southwick of Salem, Mass., daughter of John and Sarah (___) Tidd Southwick and granddaughter of Laurence (1) and Cassandra, who were fined, whipped and banished for being Quakers. Their children were: Thomas, born 1672, married Hannah Ross Feb. 28, 1699; Benjamin, born 1675, married Hannah (___); Abigail married Samuel King, Aug. 13, 1714; William.

The children of Benjamin and Hannah Buffington were: William, married Susanna Chase; Hannah, married Silas Chase 1733; Jonathan, married Sarah Luther 1735; Esther, married Stephen (4) Chase, son of Joseph (3) and Sarah Sherman (Samson 2, Philip 1) Chase, Nov. 11, 1728; Benjamin, born Feb. 9, 1701, married Isabel Chase Feb. 15, 1723. She was daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Sherman) Chase.
