#6030. 3. AYRES. E. V. W., Dec. 6, 1916. The correspondent asks, "Did Mark Ayres, son of John (1) of Brookfield, have a son Mark (3)?" Genealogy of New Hampshire (Stearns), page 152, devotes several pages to John Ayer and descendants which may interest the party making the inquiry. The "New England Historical and Genealogical Register," vol. viii., page 234; vol. xiv., page 84; vol. xv., pages 57, 58, 331 and 332, may interest him, as they are given over to these persons and their descendants. For instance, page 331-332: "Thomas married Elizabeth Hutchins April, 1657, and had: John, born May 4, 1657; Elizabeth, born Dec. 23, 1659; Mary, born March 22, 1661; Love, born April 15, 1663; two sons, born 1664, died in 1664, same year; Thomas, born June 9, 1666; and Samuel, born July 11, 1671, died July 1672, Thomas himself died Nov. 9, 1686. Peter was, like the last named, settled at Haverhill, and by wife Hannah Allen had: Ruth, Hannah, Abigail, Mary, Samuel, William, Rachel, and Ebenezer. Thus far we have traced, adding much to Savage's [an author] account. The eldest son John married first, Sarah Williams, and had a daughter Sarah by her. His [eldest son John] second wife was Susannah Symonds, but by which wife respectively were his children I do not know. [Note here: This is NOT the correct John; there is a Capt. John AYRES who immigrated to the USA (origin not yet known) and is found first in Ipswich, MA (1643) & later Brookfield, MA (where he died in 1675); this John married Susannah Symonds. I am not taking time right now to see if the data that follows on the children, correlate with the true Capt. John AYRES' children.] He removed to Brookfield, was a captain, and was killed by Indians Aug. 3, 1675. His family was of course scattered, and we will now try to trace them. In May, 1703, his sons Samuel, John and Thomas, were appointed administrators, and in 1713, Thomas, Joseph, Mark, Edward and Nathaniel, brothers, claimed the estate. Samuel we know was dead in 1714, as is then so stated by his son, Edward. John we may presume was also dead, and these seem to have been his oldest sons. In 1714 [?date not clear] the heirs were Edward, son of Samuel, John, son of Edward, Abraham and Thomas, sons of Thomas, and John, William, and Benjamin, sons of Joseph. We will see where these children were settled after the Brookfield settlement was destroyed. Edward, Mark, and Nathaniel, sons of Captain John, doubtless settled in New Hampshire, as Savage notes persons of these names as living there in 1685-9. Thomas went, without doubt, to Newbury and is the one mentioned by Savage, as we can hardly suppose there were two Thomases, each having a son Abraham. Joseph's locality is still unknown. Nathaniel, and John, perhaps came to Boston, and were the persons mentioned in "Gleanings No. 26" [from New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol 15, Jan. 1861], (ante pages 56-57) as the circumstances agree. Viz: Nathaniel having a son of the same name, and John's dying in 1711, without children. The Boston John's birth seems conclusive and he died just before the date of the deed in which his name is omitted from the list of heirs. There remains only Samuel, whom I presume to have settled like Thomas, at Newbury, and to be the one mentioned by Coffin, [an author] who had a son Jabez, born there, Dec. 27, ____ [?1690; not clear]; because a Jabez Ayres, the only one I have found yet, settled at Brookfield when it was settled, and that he was a descendant of Captain John.
