4. AYRES. Has anyone ever found the line back of William Fellows? His daughter Abigail Fellows married Samuel Ayres, son of Capt. John: then their son Joseph married I think Sarah Caldwell, but know nothing of her; can’t you give information on her? Then their son, Samuel (4), born about 1714, married Jan. 21, 1742, Martha Bell, who died Oct. 25, 1763, aged 41, so born 1722. He was drowned Nov. 15, 1768. Their son, Asa (5), born June 5, 1761, married Mary Wait, and had ten children. Resided in Chester, Mass. Hope someone gives lineage of Bell and Wait women. Asa had son Buenos, born Chester, Mass. Jan. 7, 1810, married Sept. 1, 1833, Sarah Osborn, born Sept. 2, 1816 at Oxford, New Haven County, Conn.
Her parents were Ransom Osborn and Sarah Hurd. Hurd line not known, nor full Osborne line, but from records at Oxford got some facts, and Ransom was son of Joseph and Sarah Smith. On record he is called Joseph (3) when he married March 10, 1783, and presume it is he who died Sept. 16, 1794, “Joseph, Jr.” Ransom was born April 5, 1790, and had a brother Ambrose, who names children: Eunice, Amanda, Noah Ambrose, and Sarah Rebecca, as his wife was named Rebecca ____. Ransom calls his: Sarah, Ruth, Ann [sic], Esther, Joseph Miles, Rosalind Mary, Martha Caroline, and some of these names must have come from Hurd or Smith ancestors likely.
Among the first settlers of Oxford were Thomas and Joseph Osborn, brothers likely. Among the first admissions to the church are Joseph Osborn and his wife Rebecca, Sept. 6, 1764. April 18, 1784, Joseph Osborn, Jr. and wife Sarah received to special ordinances. In an older record is this: “Joseph Osborn and Esther his wife, received to Communion from ye Pastor & Chh [sic] of Christ in west Haven, bairing [sic] date Oct. 29, 1745.” On Nov. 9, 1783, Joseph Osborn and Rebeckah removed to church at West Britain. On the older files is baptism of Joseph, son to Joseph Orsbon [sic], March 10, 1748, who is probably the Junior with wife Rebecca. Would like her family name.
Esther, wife of Capt. Joseph Osborn died March 21, 1769, and he married Oct. 26, Mrs. Abigail Lyman, who died May 28, 1791, and he then married Mrs. Elizabeth Tomlinson, Feb. 13, 1793. In all of these later records he is called Captain, and his wife Esther was in 51st year at death, so born about 1717. The question is when was Joseph, Jr., born? Was the one called Junior son of Captain or of his brother Thomas?
Whose son was Captain Joseph, and how far back can this Osborne [sic] line be traced? I have heard that these were from the New Haven line, and is that to Richard? or to Jeremiah? Shall appreciate any aid on this lineage, on Hurd, Smith. I find that Joseph had a son Leveritt, who died young, and that might aid some, as well as names Ambrose, Ransom - and on birth records it is “Joseph, Jr.” and wife Sarah, so it would look as if after removal of Joseph to West Britain this one remaining at Oxford was called Junior. Then Sarah Osborne, daughter of Ransom, married Buenos Ayres and calls son Sheldon, another odd name that may aid in tracing.
Another Osborne line is sought, and first trace of it is the marriage of Catherine Osborne, said to be of New Jersey, to a Quaker line, Francis Barnard, Jr. born at Nantucket, Mass., July 4, 1747, married November, 1768. Their daughter Jemima married Daniel Jones, and the Barnard line runs back through Francis Barnard, Sr., and wife Elizabeth Macy: Benjamin Barnard and wife Judith Gardner, married 11:8:1711; and then records disagree, one says his father was Nathaniel, Jr. and mother Elizabeth Starbuck, formerly wife of Peter Coffin, while the other gives him as son of Nathaniel, Sr., and wife Mary Barnard his cousin. Shall be glad to get these fixed up. What Osborne was in New Jersey, and from whence did he go? And what ancestry?
#9375. 3. SYMONDS. M.S.S.S., December 21, 1921. Is Mark Symonds related to Samuel Symonds, deputy governor? If so I have some facts on that line, as it is one of my own coming down through his marriage to Martha (Reade) Epps.
