This Miles line gives wife of Theophilus son of Samuel (2), as marrying, Feb. 3, 1700, Mary Buell, daughter of William, presumably the one who married at Windsor, 1640, Mary Post, and about whom a romance is told. You are excellent authority on the old Connecticut families and say this is an error, and the he left widow Bethia ____? Might she not be a second wife? or what is the proof that she is mother of Jonathan, born Nov. 5, 1700, married, April 4, 1723, Zerviah Wooster, daughter of Thomas and wife Phebe Tomlinson, both old Connecticut families, but unfortunately have not data on these. In the Connecticut Magazine for November and December, 1900, on Seymour history it was stated that a division was made march 12, 170_ [ink blot], Section 10 set off for “Widow Miles,” “wife of Samuel,” and that her son Jonathan built a house on the land about 1724, and left two sons, Theophilus, born Feb. 11, 1739 and Jonathan second, born 1745. Theophilus had son Theophilus, and he had son Sheldon Miles living in 1900, aged 83. Somewhere there is an error that should be corrected quickly, and not let the publication continue. The only way I can fix this up is that Theophilus must have died young, and it was his widow, not Samuel’s meant, for the age of Jonathan’s son Theophilus corresponds closely to that given in Seymour history, as compiled by W. C. Sharpe, as he gives his birth Feb. 12, 1739, and magazine has his it Feb. 11, 1730. Presume only examination of deeds and wills, settlement of estates, etc., will fix this right. Seymour records give Agnes Hawkins, daughter of Joseph and Mercy Johnson (daughter of Peter Johnson of Fairfield), as born Nov. 6, 1681, perhaps twin of Lois. Joseph Hawkins was born in Milford, 1642-3, son of Robert Hawkins, who came in 1635 and was in Milford, 1639-40. Can there be found a Meeker family of Bethlehem, Conn., where Mary came from, who married Theophilus Miles? Dying Oct. 19, 1795, in 44th year, makes birth 1751. I found an item that Daniel Mallery [sic] of New Haven married, about 1715, Abigail ___. Is not her family known? And his line? Another item leads me to think that probably Samuel Miles was not an infant when baptized, for “Sam Myles took oath of fidelity 7th of 2nd mo., 1657,” and presume he must then have been twenty-one. As his mother, Widow Catherine Constable, was born 1592, married about 1638, Richard Miles as his second wife, can we not find more about him, the offices he held, etc.? And how he got title of “Colonel”? He was a judge and a representative, was in Milford, 1639, and New Haven, 1643. Does any one know the lineage of wife Catherine? Or who his first wife was? Her own children by first marriage got property in England after her death, and perhaps her maiden name can be found from this property that came to her children. I find that Hannah (Miles) Hurd had a brother Sheldon, and a nephew also; so that accounts for the name being used in Osborn family later, and being carried down to successive generations after the marriage of Buenos Ayres to Sarah Osborne, Sept. 1, 1833. He was son of Asa Ayres of Chester, Hampden County, Mass. and wife Mary Wait, of whom I have no record except that they had ten children (a favorite number in Ayres families!), and that Asa was born June 5, 1761, and his parents were: Joseph Ayres, who died Nov. 15, 1768, aged fifty-two, and his mother was Martha Bell, who died Oct. 25, 1765, aged forty-one; so very much desire aid on Wait and Bell lines. Joseph had ten children also. One record had it Samuel Ayres married Martha Bell, while others have ti as given above, but would like proofs on the right line. It runs back to Captain John Ayres of Brookfield, Mass., through son Samuel, whose wife was Abigail Fellows, daughter of William.
#9375. 4. AYRES. “Nyumps, “ May 2, 1923. My sincere thanks are extended to you for your kindly aid. I have some loose sheets of Seymour genealogies, and the full Miles line is given there down to Hannah, born Feb. 27, 1773, married Ebenezer Hurd - - but no Ebenezer given of suitable age to marry her, hence that line not yet found, and am anxious to have aid on it, and on Meeker, Tomlinson, Wooster also and believe that likely these latter families are given in the books, but not in what leaves I possess.
