- [This same] David Shaffer & Catherine "Kate"
Faust Shaffer later made their home in Greenland, an area which
is now the present site of the Village of Rummel in Paint Twp.,
Somerset Co. Pa. He is listed as being a "Gentleman",
retired farmer at the age of 81 years on the 1850 Federal census
records. His death is thought to be shortly after this as he does
not appear on later records.
- In his religious life he was a mad of the Lutheran faith,
in politics it is said he was of the Whig party, He was one of
the great pioneer men of that era, helping to mold the farm lands
of Somerset County. His sons and daughters of intermarried names
as Helman, Seese, & Ripple, inherited and bought up land in
both Somerset and Bedford Counties. Some later migrated into other
states and counties where they raised their children of whom many
became ministers of the church, doctors, teachers, and prominent
citizens.
- The only memorial of David Shaffer I, pioneer ancestor of
the Paint Twp., Somerset County families, is an old field stone
which is thought to be his grave marker. It is located on what
is now the Lutheran Church Cemetery, Village of Rummel but was
one time the Andy Shaffer farm land.
