She is now buried in the Berkey cem. in Paint Twp. but were buried on the Andy Shaffer farm near the graves of her brother David Shaffer and Dave's wife, Kate Faust.

He was a member of the Lutheran church, and a Whig in politics. He married Catherine Faust and they had ten children with the same names as the 10 we know.--(Koontz 1906, p. 407.) 11/11/1819 David Shaffer bought from Abraham Morrison 333.40 acres of land which joined David Livingston. This, evidently was the Holsopple tract.--(Somerset co. courthouse.)

Shaffer was the 4th son and 7th child of John and Catherine (Couster) Shaffer with the given birth and death dates. "He was a man of good judgment and sterling qualities, and these made up for educational defeciencies. He settled in Paint township, in 1852, on the farm purchased from his father, and there resided until 1864, when he removed to where Windber now stands. He was in the lumber contracting and building bussiness at the time of the great flood of May 31, 1889, at Johnstown. He was a member of the German Baptist church, in which he held the position of deacon, and affiliated with the Whig party. He served for a number of years as school director and supervisor. He was among the first to be drafted at the outbreak of the Civil war, and paid $300 which the government accepted in lieu of his services. During 1863-5, he was post provost marshal and enrolling officer.

. . . 8 SHAFFER, Daniel D., Born 8 Feb 1868 in Somerset Co., PA, Died 6 Dec 1900 in Berkey Cem.,Paint Twp. at age 32; Daniel was reared on the farm, but his father also operated a sawmill and planing-mill, and many of Daniel's younger days were passed in the woods and in the mill. Being naturally somewhat of a genius, he enjoyed working about machinery. He also learned the carpenter trade. As there was always much work during the winter he received only an ordinary common school education, though he was a diligent pupil when in school. About 1890 he and Marilla united with the church, and in 1893 he, with James F. Ream and J.J. Shaffer, was called to the ministry. Brother Shaffer was a close student of the Scriptues, and took up the work of the ministry with commendable zeal, preaching not only from the pulpit, but privately he made use of every opportunity to persuade men to lead a Christian life. By naturehe was kind and generous, ever ready to help others. His mother, who is an octogenarian, put it this way: "Daniel was always a good boy." While working at his trade he had a fall from a building, from which he never fully recovered. His mind was somewhat affected. He died aged only 32 years, 9 months and 28 days. He is buried in the Berkey cemetery.--(History of the Church of the Brethren of Western Penna, by Blough, 1916, p. 532.)

"C", 32nd Infantry of Iowa. Because of his kinky hair, he was nicknamed "Curly". He participated in 17 victorious battles and was promoted seven times. He was never in the guard house, orarrested, and was wounded twice. Frank was honorably discharged in Aug. 1865. He lost four brothers in the Civil War. Because he came out of the war alive, he believed that there was no gun made that could kill him. After the Civil war he took up barbering in Parkersburg, Iowa. During 1872 and 1873, he carried U.S. mail from Lowell, Nebraska to Red Willow, Nebraska. At this time he was also homesteading 160 acres, just east of Alma. In the spring of 1872, 1200 Indians camped on Frank's place, and he was compelled to pull up hundreds of stakes before he could break the sod. These stakes had been driven by Indians, in staking down buffalo hides to dry in the sun. Also that year, frnak erected the first house (log) on the town side of Alma. In 1875, he moved a little house from his nearby homestead into Alma, and it was used until 1877 for county purposes. At this time, he became a member of the Alma Townsite Co. In 1880 when Alma was incorporated into a town, Frank Shaffer was named as a trustee.In 1884, when Frank was running a livery barn, a fire broke out, and the barn was destroyed. Similiarly, in 1890, the Shaffer House, Frank's hotel, was destroyed by fire. Frank squandered much of his wife's inheritance. With a portion of the money, he bought 1400 acres of land at Republican City, Nebr., which he later sold. He was always hoping that he would make a profit and thus kept spending Jennie's money for various and sundry "deals". However, his ability to get along well with people made him well liked by everyone. In the late 1800's, the Shaffer family moved to a house on the east edge of Alma, which was accompanied by fifteen acres of land, and here Frank lived until his death. --(Mrs. Esker Shaffer).

In physical appearance, Jennie was slender and of medium height. She had dark hair and eyes and wore her hair long and parted in the middle. They lived in Butler Co., Iowa, until moving to Harlan Co., Nebraska in 1872. They had seven children.--(Mrs. Esker Shaffer).
